It’s surprisingly hard to find games that truly capture the feeling of being a pirate. Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag did it well, which is why there’s excitement for the upcoming remastered version, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. Ubisoft tried to recreate that success with Skull and Bones, but the game faced many delays. While other pirate games have been released, none have been as popular or memorable as Black Flag – until now, perhaps, with Windrose. Windrose is now available in Steam Early Access as of April 14th, and it remains to be seen if it will reach the same level of success.
Okay, so the game usually costs $29.99, but there’s also a bundle available for $39.99 if you want a little extra. And great news for Steam players – if you buy before April 21st, you get 10% off as a launch discount! The bundle comes with the game’s soundtrack and some cool wallpapers, which is a nice bonus.
Windrose shows a lot of promise and quickly gained popularity. A short demo released in February drew thousands of players and a huge number of wishlists on Steam, immediately placing it among the top 30 most anticipated games. This was despite only showcasing a small part of the full experience. Essentially, Windrose combines the adventurous spirit of Black Flag with the ship combat and upgrades of Skull and Bones, then adds challenging, Souls-like combat to a PvE adventure. It also features co-op RPG elements and open-world survival crafting – a combination that seems likely to be very successful.
Windrose is Unexpected Pirate Game Competition for AC Black Flag Resynced
What’s Going on With AC Black Flag Resynced?
The status of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is currently unclear. After Ubisoft confirmed the game was in development following rumors and internal changes, updates have been scarce. In fact, there’s been just as much speculation since the announcement as before it. While we’ll have to wait for its official release, Windrose is currently available in Early Access and is worth checking out. It will be fascinating to see how this pirate game develops over time.
What to Expect After Downloading Windrose
Windrose is a large-scale, open-world RPG where you play as a pirate trying to survive. The game features both land and sea battles, and while you can mostly focus on fighting AI enemies, there are also options for player-versus-player combat and playing with friends. It’s an ambitious game with a lot to offer, and its extensive list of features suggests it’s off to a promising start.
- Single-Player and optional Co-Op (up to ~8 players in shared pirate crews)
- Character Creation
- Lengthy story with unique main quests, side quests, enemies, and tough boss fights
- The story revolves around challenging Blackbeard’s dominance on the seas while dealing with an empire-scale conflict and supernatural forces.
- There are 3 dominant biomes spread across procedural generated biomes and over 90 Points of Interest
- There are 3 playable ships currently. Players actively captain, upgrade, and engage in combat with them.
- Naval combat includes the ability to board enemies a la Black Flag
- There’s fully fleshed out survival crafting features where players gather resources, build bases, recruit NPCs, and manage progression systems
- There are factions, faction quests, and more in the hub of Tortuga Town
In terms of direct combat, Windrose offers challenging boss battles that feel fair. It uses a Soulslike combat system, emphasizing careful stamina management, dodging, and learning enemy attacks. Players will generally want to use a hit-and-run approach, as enemies are powerful. The game also features a system similar to Bloodborne, where you can regain health by quickly counterattacking after being hit.

Additionally, the team behind Windrose is already acting on player feedback from the recent demo. They’re planning significant changes, including improvements to loot, expanded cooperative play, and better controls, performance, and navigation. They’re also considering quality-of-life updates for ship roles, reward adjustments, new features, and technical enhancements. Overall, Windrose‘s launch into Early Access is proving to be very promising, exceeding what’s typical for games at this stage.
Windrose Hopefully Signals a New Era of Pirate Games
While some believe competition is essential to capitalism, Windrose is already proving successful and has plans for even more content and platforms. We’re also excited about the upcoming AC Black Flag Resynced, and see potential in games like Sea of Remnant. Since the release of Black Flag, there haven’t been many truly great, ground-level pirate adventures. Ultimately, the more pirate games available, the better for everyone.
While Windrose shares similarities with games like Assassin’s Creed Black Flag and Skull and Bones, it distinguishes itself through its focus on open-world survival and crafting. It builds upon those games by creating a more immersive, lived-in world where survival mechanics are central to the experience, making it unique.
With both Windrose and Black Flag Resynced available, players can expect a blend of pirate adventures – exploring both land and sea, and experiencing engaging progression. However, Black Flag focuses on a strong, story-driven experience within a carefully crafted world, while Windrose emphasizes freedom, a more challenging progression system, and a dynamic, open-ended sandbox. If Black Flag Resynced adopts too many elements from Windrose, it risks losing its identity, which fans wouldn’t appreciate. Ultimately, having a diverse range of pirate games benefits players.
