Naughty Dog is a hugely important studio for Sony, best known for creating the incredibly popular and influential game, The Last of Us. However, they haven’t released a completely new game for the current generation of consoles. They’ve mainly focused on updated versions of their existing titles like The Last of Us and Uncharted 4. Studio head Neil Druckmann also spent time overseeing the Last of Us television series.
Naughty Dog has become well-known recently for The Last of Us, and it’s easy to see them as primarily the studio behind that franchise. However, they’re not stopping there. Their next project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, will be a completely new game – their first since 2013. While they’re exploring new ideas, don’t count out future installments in either The Last of Us or Uncharted, which remain two of their most popular series.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet Could Come Out in Early 2027
We know very little about Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet other than the fact that you play as Jordan A. Mun, a space bounty hunter seeking revenge. However, Sony is expected to share more details in 2026 as they release and promote their own games. With Saros coming in April and Marvel’s Wolverine in the fall, it’s likely we’ll see a trailer, gameplay demo, or even a release date for Intergalactic before the end of the year. Sony needs to start building excitement for its upcoming games, and Naughty Dog can’t afford to stay silent about Intergalactic for too long. Unlike GTA 6, they need to keep players engaged and informed to maintain interest.

Work on Intergalactic began around 2020, shortly after The Last of Us Part 2 came out, making a release between early and mid-2027 seem realistic. This timing aligns with recent rumors suggesting we’ll see more of the game later this year.
Besides the potential story details, there’s talk that Intergalactic will be a huge step forward in graphics and how the game’s environments look. Naughty Dog is known for pushing visual boundaries, and since this is their first game built specifically for the PlayStation 5, it could be their most impressive game yet.
A New Uncharted Game Is Most Likely On the Way
It’s no surprise that rumors about a fifth Uncharted game have been circulating since Uncharted 4 came out in 2016. Many were surprised the series went quiet after the Lost Legacy expansion in 2017, but industry experts suggest a new game wasn’t for lack of effort. Several sources, including Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, have reported that Sony’s Visual Arts Services Group originally planned to remake the first Uncharted game a few years ago. However, the team later shifted its focus to The Last of Us Part 1 – the 2021 remake of the original Last of Us.

There’s a lot pointing to a remake of the original Uncharted game. Former head of Visual Arts Service Group (VASG) Michael Mumbauer mentioned pursuing remakes while at Sony, and files from The Last of Us Part II – built with a different game engine – contained references to assets from the first Uncharted. This suggests the remake might still be in the works at one of Sony’s studios, even though VASG is no longer involved. While a remake would likely be successful given how old the original game is, it might not be the grand revival fans are hoping for.
Rumors About an Actual ‘Uncharted 5’ Have Floated Around as Well
A recent Bloomberg report detailed that, in addition to working on a remake of Uncharted, Bend Studio was originally assigned a brand new Uncharted game after finishing Days Gone. The studio divided into two teams: one for the new Uncharted and another for what would eventually become the canceled Last of Us multiplayer project. However, by 2021, studio leadership decided to move Bend Studio off the Uncharted title to focus on developing their own original game. As of 2023, the Last of Us multiplayer game has been officially canceled.
Bend Studio had experience with the Uncharted series before, having developed Uncharted: Golden Abyss, a well-received spin-off game for the PlayStation Vita in 2011.
Shaun Escayg, a developer who previously directed Uncharted: The Lost Legacy at Naughty Dog, is another person to watch. He rejoined the studio in 2021 after leaving in 2018, and his current project is unknown. Many assumed he’d be working on a new Uncharted game, given his experience. This speculation increased when he posted a photo on Instagram of Fort George in Trinidad with the caption “Research…” – leading many to believe he’s researching a location for the next Uncharted installment.
Several hints suggest Naughty Dog is working on more than just the previously reported Intergalactic game. These include a 2022 LinkedIn post mentioning the Uncharted series, a Sony job listing for a prominent Naughty Dog project, and comments from people familiar with the studio, like former The Last of Us multiplayer director Vinit Agarwal, who stated Naughty Dog often works on multiple single-player games at once. A newer leaker, Alir, claims that one of these projects is, in fact, a new Uncharted game.
Last of Us 3 Might Also Be in Development
Information about The Last of Us 3 is scarce, consisting mainly of conflicting statements from the series creator, Neil Druckmann. In 2024, he mentioned having an idea for a third game, but a year later, he told Variety that there might not be any more Last of Us games at all. He later explained that many factors would need to come together perfectly for another project to happen, so nothing is certain.
Despite what Neil Druckmann says publicly, there’s a good chance The Last of Us 3 is actually in development. There are three key things that suggest this is the case.
- In September 2025, Druckmann posted a photo of The Last of Us TV show. In the caption, he wrote, “Can’t wait to give y’all more [The Last of Us] updates when the time is right.”
- In a 2025 interview with Variety, Druckmann said he was working on “various Last of Us things,” aside from the show.
- In March 2026, Druckmann posted photos of early sketches for the first Last of Us, saying this in the caption: “Been a wild journey. Grateful for every part of it, especially the few stops that remain on the road ahead.”
It’s important to remember that Neil Druckmann left the Last of Us TV show after its second season. This means any future Last of Us projects he mentions likely aren’t related to the HBO series. Even if he is still involved with the show remotely, his recent comment about “a few stops left on the road ahead” is surprising, since many believe the next season will be the last. Plus, he told Variety in 2025 that he’s working on other Last of Us projects besides the TV show.
It doesn’t make much sense for Naughty Dog to officially announce The Last of Us 3 right now. They’re still focused on promoting and releasing their new game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and don’t want to overshadow it by talking about a sequel to The Last of Us. It seems like Neil Druckmann wants to avoid a lot of early speculation and guesswork until they have something concrete to share, like a trailer. So, for now, we’ll have to be patient and wait for the right moment, as he’s indicated.
