After the first movie, Twilight, came out in 2008, The Twilight Saga became incredibly popular and a major part of pop culture. It inspired countless fan-written stories, a wide range of products, and heated discussions, especially about whether fans supported Edward or Jacob. Throughout the five Twilight movies, characters like Bella, Edward, the Cullen family, and the werewolves battled many dangerous enemies, and one of the most popular villains with fans was the wandering vampire, Victoria.

Rachelle Lefevre first played the character created by Stephenie Meyer, but Bryce Dallas Howard took over the role in Eclipse. While both actresses did a fantastic job, Howard’s casting was a bit controversial, especially because it was a surprise change so late in the story. Many fans are curious about the reasons behind the switch and what happened behind the scenes that led to the decision, regardless of which actress they prefer.

Who is Victoria in the Twilight Movies?

The story of Twilight begins when Bella Swan moves from Phoenix, Arizona, to the small town of Forks to live with her father. She quickly learns about the mysterious Cullen family, who keep to themselves. In biology class, Bella finds herself seated next to Edward Cullen, the youngest of the family, and she becomes increasingly curious about him, especially after he seems to break the laws of physics to protect her. When Edward finally admits he’s a vampire, a romantic relationship begins to blossom between them.

A relationship between a human and a vampire was always going to be challenging, but things become especially dangerous when three menacing vampires arrive in Forks and start causing trouble. These vampires – James, Laurent, and Victoria – are incredibly powerful and rack up a number of victims before they set their sights on Bella. The situation worsens in New Moon when Edward, worried about Bella’s safety, breaks up with her and leaves. He has to return, however, when Victoria seeks revenge for the death of James, whom Edward killed in Twilight to stop his attacks.

Okay, so in New Moon, things get really tense because Victoria, played by Rachelle Lefevre, is relentlessly hunting Bella, and it’s honestly terrifying to watch her constantly looking over her shoulder. The whole wolfpack, including Jacob, is pretty much glued to her side trying to protect her, but Bella’s emotional state is really fragile, and Victoria uses that against her, manipulating things to put her in even more danger. We see Victoria take out Harry Clearwater, which is awful, but thankfully the Quileute wolves eventually manage to defeat her, and she has to run away from Forks to save herself.

Victoria is a character in The Twilight Saga, appearing until her death in Eclipse. However, Bryce Dallas Howard took over the role before the final film. Jamie Lefevre originally played Victoria, bringing a captivating mix of danger, seduction, and elegance to the character, making her both frightening and beautiful.

Why Was Victoria Recast in Twilight?

Rachelle Lefevre had to leave the Twilight Saga because of a scheduling issue. She had accepted a role in the 2010 film Barney’s Version, which tells the story of Barney and his life – including his three marriages and eventful career – as he tries to prove he didn’t kill his friend. A ten-day shoot for Barney’s Version clashed with filming for Eclipse, and rather than work around Lefevre’s commitment, the producers of Twilight decided to find a new actress for the part.

Rachelle Lefevre wrote to the director of Twilight, Catherine Hardwicke, to express her strong desire to play Victoria, even researching lion attacks on YouTube to inform the character’s animalistic movements. Lefevre later told Access Hollywood she was upset to learn she wouldn’t be returning for future films, and fans immediately started online petitions asking the studio, Summit Entertainment, to reinstate her. However, Summit announced Bryce Dallas Howard would take over the role in July 2009.

Bryce Dallas Howard Did a Fantastic Job as Victoria

Taking over the role from Lefevre was a significant challenge for Bryce Dallas Howard, but she did an excellent job of portraying a Victoria that stayed true to the book. While already known for her acting in films like Spider-Man 3 and As You Like It, Howard continued to establish herself as a talented performer with roles in Jurassic World and The Help.

Dallas Howard’s portrayal of Victoria in the Twilight films remained faithful to the character as described in Stephenie Meyer’s books. While some viewers found her version less outwardly frightening, Howard skillfully captured Victoria’s focused intensity and relentless, carefully planned desire for revenge. In Eclipse, Victoria starts creating a group of newly-turned vampires to help her track and confront Edward.

Victoria’s attack pushes the Cullens and werewolves to join forces, training and fighting together as one. This leads to some of the most exciting action sequences in the series. The battle feels raw and intense, and the training scenes and realistic fight choreography make it more believable and thrilling than anything seen in earlier films.

Edward finally defeats Victoria in this fight, marking the last appearance of her character in The Twilight Saga. While Bella and Edward still encounter threats, the story moves away from the wandering vampires and focuses on the powerful, ancient Volturi coven.
