The incredibly popular manga and anime series Yu-Gi-Oh! is turning 30! To mark the anniversary, publisher Shueisha has released a special video highlighting iconic moments from the series. Since 1996, fans worldwide have enjoyed the story of Yugi Mutou and the exciting Duel Monsters card game, which continues to be a hit. Even after the tragic loss of creator Kazuki Takahashi in 2022, his masterpiece lives on, and fans in Japan and around the globe are looking forward to celebrating this major milestone throughout 2026.
By July 2022, over 40 million copies of the Yu-Gi-Oh manga had been sold, making it one of the best-selling manga series ever – comparable to hits like Spy x Family, Shaman King, and The Promised Neverland. However, the manga’s success is just a small part of the overall Yu-Gi-Oh franchise, which includes a hugely popular trading card game, anime, movies, books, and video games. In total, Yu-Gi-Oh has generated an estimated $5.42 billion in sales, and that number continues to rise as the series remains a cultural phenomenon.
The Yu-Gi-Oh Manga Series Celebrates 30 Years With Video Set to Anime Theme Song
Over the 30 years of the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise, many incredible duels have unfolded. A new video on Shueisha’s official manga YouTube channel celebrates these memorable battles with a special montage. The video is set to “Overlap,” the fifth opening theme song from the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime, performed by Kimeru. Kimeru is also known for his work on other popular anime like The Prince of Tennis, and he previously contributed opening themes for Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS in 2018 and 2019.
A special exhibition showcasing the original artwork of Kazuki Takahashi, the creator of YU-GI-OH!, will be held in Tokyo this winter. This is the first time a collection of his work will be publicly displayed, featuring things like early sketches, rare artwork, and materials used in the creation of the manga’s characters and monsters. Exclusive merchandise will be available for purchase. More details about the event will be announced in late August, and it’s currently unknown if the exhibition will travel to other locations.
Since the tragic passing of manga artist Kazuki Takahashi in 2022, fans continue to celebrate his incredible work and his heroic character – he died trying to rescue three people from a dangerous ocean current in Okinawa.
