I’ve witnessed Sung Jinwoo’s journey in the captivating world of “Solo Leveling,” a story that truly shines during his days as an E-rank Hunter. Amidst his struggles, he faced the heartrending reality of his mother being in eternal slumber, and he tirelessly worked to sustain her. Additionally, he shouldered the responsibility of supporting his sister financially as well.
If Sung Jinwoo’s father had been around, all of this could have been prevented. However, as it stands, the identity of Jinwoo’s father remains a mystery to him, with fans speculating about this enigmatic character in Solo Leveling. The burning question among fans is when will Sung Jinwoo finally encounter his father?
Who Is Sung Jinwoo’s Father?
Sung Jinwoo’s dad was once a firefighter named Sung Il-Hwan, but he switched careers to become a Hunter when the opportunity arose. He advanced rapidly in this new field and achieved an S-rank status. Yet, compared to later S-rank Hunters, Sung Il-Hwan did not gain as much public recognition.
In his role as an elite S-rank Hunter, Sung Il-Hwan found himself assigned to conquer formidable dungeons. Unfortunately, during one of these missions, he became trapped. He wandered for a considerable amount of time, teetering on the brink of death. However, just when it seemed all hope was lost, the Rulers intervened and saved him from impending doom. In exchange for his life, they proposed giving him power, but with strings attached – he would have to complete a specific task: assassinating the Shadow Monarch. With no viable alternatives, Sung Il-Hwan reluctantly agreed to the offer to survive.
Sung Il-Hwan Reaches America

After Sung Jinwoo was chosen as The Player, the Leaders instructed Il-Hwan to return to Earth and complete his mission. He arrived in America, only to be apprehended by the Federal Bureau of Investigators (FBI). To interrogate him, they called upon Hwang Dongsoo. However, things quickly went awry as Dongsoo threatened to kill Jinwoo, infuriating Il-Hwan. This led to a violent altercation between them, causing the building to collapse. Shortly afterwards, Il-Hwan encountered Silad, the Frost King, but was forced to retreat.
In the Japan Crisis storyline, Sung Il-Hwan appeared next. Upon discovering that his target was in the country, he chose to move towards the specified location. It turned out that Sung Jinwoo had become the new Shadow Monarch. Given that Jinwoo was a relative, Il-Hwan hesitated to commit such an atrocity. He anticipated the Rulers’ wrath and potential retaliation. However, things took a turn when they witnessed Jinwoo killing Legia. As a result, the Rulers reconsidered and assigned new tasks to Sung Il-Hwan: protect Sung Jinwoo from any impending dangers.

- Jinwoo’s father passed away shortly afterward
Before the International Guild Conference, it hadn’t crossed Jinwoo’s mind that his father was still alive. It wasn’t until they shared Il-Hwan’s photo that he discovered this fact. Additionally, the Bureau disclosed that he was the main suspect in the murder of Christopher Reed.
In less than ideal situations, Jinwoo encountered his father, Sung Il-Hwan. At that moment, Il-Hwan was critically injured, having sustained heavy damage while confronting two Monarchs simultaneously. He had fulfilled his duty by shielding Jinwoo. Upon recognizing that Jinwoo could manage the Monarchs, he hastily departed from the scene. The strain of the encounter caused Il-Hwan’s body to deteriorate rapidly. Regrettably, he was running out of time, but fortunately, Jinwoo located him in time.
In their conversation, they experienced a touching moment as they opened up about their emotions. The protagonist inquired if the elder had any longing for his family, and he admitted that he did. Furthermore, Sung Il-Hwan expressed regret for not being an ideal father to his son, Jinwoo, and also stated his desire to spend more quality time with him.
I’m sorry that I couldn’t be a great father to you. — Sung Il-Hwan to Jinwoo
As Il-Hwan’s existence slowly slipped away, he ensured one final embrace with his son. The sight of my father after such a long absence was already painful; witnessing his demise before me only intensified that sorrow. It’s no wonder then, that even the mightiest Hunter had tears streaming down his face. After his father’s passing, Sung Jinwoo vowed retribution against the Monarchs.
