Xbox Gave PS5 Its Best-Selling Game of 2025 So Far

By April of 2025, Forza Horizon 5 had become the top-selling game on PlayStation 5. This was after it was released on Sony’s console in April. Known as one of the best racing games ever made and highly acclaimed as one of the best games from its release year, Forza Horizon 5, set in Mexico, was initially launched in 2021. It shares the highest Metacritic score in its series with its predecessor, Forza Horizon 4, sitting at a remarkable 92.

It appears that over the last year, Xbox has shown signs of not wanting to maintain some of its top-tier games as exclusives within their own system. This shift began with smaller games like Grounded, Sea of Thieves, and Hi-Fi Rush being released on Nintendo Switch and PS5 last year, which could be seen as testing the waters. In 2025, Xbox took a larger step, making their first-party hit, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, available on PS5 only four months after its initial release in December 2024. Additionally, the latest addition to one of their major franchises, Forza Horizon 5, was also made available on PS5. This move has led to a significant increase in popularity for the game on PS5, making it one of the best-selling games of the year.

Currently, “Forza Horizon 5” has outpaced “Monster Hunter World” by Capcom, becoming the best-selling PlayStation 5 game this year with a total of three million units sold on the platform. Other games close behind include “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey” in third place, followed by “Elden Ring” and the critically acclaimed indie title “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33”. It’s worth noting that Sony’s upcoming release, “Death Stranding 2”, was launched only last month, yet its widespread acclaim is unexpectedly absent from this top-selling list.

Forza Horizon 5 is the PS5’s Best-Selling Game So Far This Year

While Forza Horizon 5 is currently thriving on PS5, it’s challenging to predict that it will maintain its leading position throughout the rest of the year. The remainder of 2025 is packed with notable games set to launch, such as Sucker Punch’s upcoming title Ghost of Yotei in October, which could potentially challenge for the top spot. Additionally, established titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, EA Sports FC 26, and College Football 26 are likely to claim spots on PS5’s best-selling list by year-end. Games like Monster Hunter Wilds and Assassin’s Creed Shadows might have reached their maximum sales potential for the year, but could see a small resurgence due to Game Awards nominations, particularly for Clair Obscur, which is one of the clear contenders for Game of the Year.

This year, Xbox first-party games won’t be wrapping up on the PS5 just yet. For instance, the remastered version of “Gears of War: Reloaded,” originally from 2006, is set to debut on PS5 next month. Similarly, Obsidian’s third game for 2025, titled “The Outer Worlds 2,” will also be available on the PS5 in October. In the interim, gamers on the PS5 who haven’t dived into “Forza Horizon 5” can enjoy a 25% discount as part of PlayStation’s Summer Sale.
