Leaked SpongeBob Game is Doing Something Unexpected

It’s rumored that an unofficial leak suggests the new SpongeBob SquarePants game will bypass the Nintendo Switch, opting instead for its anticipated successor, the Switch 2. Given that many Nintendo enthusiasts haven’t had the chance to experience the Switch 2 yet, this seemingly bold move by THQ Nordic, the developers behind the upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants game, comes as a bit of a surprise.

As a gaming enthusiast, I stumbled upon hints of an unexpected SpongeBob SquarePants game back in June, when it was rated by both the South Korean and German boards. At the same time, details emerged that this game, titled “SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans of the Tide,” was being developed by THQ Nordic for PC and current-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles. This leak followed a 2024 teaser suggesting a new SpongeBob game in the following year. More recently, a fresh report has disclosed additional information about this leaked title, including its potential release date and price.

Based on Dealabs, the game “SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans of the Tide” is set to release on November 18, 2025, and will be available on PC and current-gen consoles like PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the upcoming Switch 2. This means that the new “SpongeBob SquarePants” game will not be playable on older systems such as the original Switch, PS4, and Xbox One, potentially excluding a significant number of players. The price for this game is expected to be USD 39.99 across all platforms, with physical copies available for PS5 and Switch 2. An official announcement from THQ Nordic may be coming within the next two weeks, possibly during a Nintendo Direct or at their upcoming digital showcase scheduled for August 1.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans of the Tide to Skip the Original Switch

Despite having sold millions of units globally since its launch on June 5, the Switch 2 remains hard to obtain for many consumers. Nintendo is projected to grapple with stock shortages well into 2026 due to high demand outpacing supply. The scarcity of the Switch 2 has prevented numerous users from upgrading from the initial model to its latest version.

Despite the potential advantage of enhanced performance on the rumored SpongeBob SquarePants game for Switch 2, the decision to exclude the original Switch could lead to a decrease in sales due to losing out on existing players. Nevertheless, there’s still time before the anticipated launch of this game, and it is hoped that more prospective buyers will upgrade to Switch 2 by then, increasing its potential market.
