So, you remember that time Akon was gonna build a futuristic crypto city in Senegal? Yeah, well, it turns out Senegal decided they’d rather have a beach vacation spot instead. Go figure. 🏖️
They’re taking back most of the land and going full tourism mode. It’s like when I tried to turn my garage into a state-of-the-art gym, but then realized I just needed more space for my bike. 🚴♂️
Back in 2018, Akon announced his plan to turn Mbodiène, a sleepy little farming village, into a $6 billion metropolis powered by his very own cryptocurrency, Akoin. He called it a “real-life Wakanda.” I mean, who wouldn’t want to live in a place named after a song? 🎶

But after years of delays, missed payments, and a final warning from Senegal’s tourism board, SAPCO, the project is officially kaput. SAPCO’s General Manager, Serigne Mamadou Mboup, put it bluntly:
“The Akon City project no longer exists.”
Most of the 136 acres originally given to Akon are now back under government control. But don’t worry, Akon isn’t completely out of the game. He’s keeping about 20 acres for a smaller, more manageable project. It’s like when I had to downsize my dream kitchen because I couldn’t afford all the fancy appliances. 🍳
Senegal’s decision comes at a time when the country is facing serious economic issues. They’ve got a debt crisis on their hands, and it looks like they’re trying to make the best of a bad situation by focusing on tourism. The new plan for Mbodiène is a $1.2 billion project that will rely on private investors to build hotels, apartments, and a promenade. It’s a lot less flashy than a crypto city, but hey, at least it might actually get built. 🏗️
For those who bought into Akon’s crypto dream, the only tangible results were a youth center, a basketball court, and a small welcome center. Not exactly the futuristic utopia they were promised. Now, early Akoin buyers are demanding refunds, and some locals are just rolling their eyes. 🙄
The new tourism plan is expected to create around 15,000 jobs in its first phase. So, while the crypto city may have been a bust, at least there’s a chance for some real, tangible benefits for the community. Maybe next time, Akon can stick to singing and leave the city planning to the professionals. 🎤
