The following contains spoilers for the Vinalnd Saga manga.
Following many years of being published, the epic tale of Vinland Saga has reached its finale, leaving fans worldwide stunned yet awestruck by the dramatic twists that wrapped up one of the most contentious storylines in the comic. Readers were left with a blend of horror, astonishment, and disbelief as they witnessed the resolution of the Vinland Saga (or Thousand-Year Voyage), culminating in the death of one of the series’ most cherished characters.
If Thorfinn’s journey has demonstrated something to viewers, it is that even in the darkest times, a beacon of hope glows more vividly, guiding those who are wandering through despair and sadness. This is what many viewers seem to think, although some may not concur with how things ultimately unfolded. Regardless, everyone has grown in some way while witnessing the saga of Thorfinn Karlsefni and his transformation throughout the series.
The Bittersweet Conclusion Of Vinland Saga Left Fans Scarred
Fans Gather At The Mangaka’s X Page To Share Praise And Sorrow

Multitudes of enthusiasts have flooded Makoto Yukimura’s X Page with expressions of appreciation, affection, admiration, along with some criticisms regarding the grim and sorrowful twist the series took towards its conclusion. However, many also shared how the series played a significant role in their personal growth, teaching them to cope with despair and move forward towards a noble resolution. And if that is indeed the underlying theme of Vinland Saga, conquering an insurmountable affliction (war) and making any sacrifices required to achieve a peaceful ending, regardless of the consequences.
If given a choice between allowing Thorfinn to depart and granting Einar a well-deserved happy ending, fans likely wouldn’t hesitate, leaving readers astonished to learn just how many believed that the one destined to perish was none other than the main character of Vinland Saga.
Despite the beautiful bloom of affection between Bug Eyes and Niskawaji’j, and Thorfinn’s joyous reunion with his family, this resolution came at a great cost. The majority of the expedition men didn’t survive, and Thorfinn’s hesitancy during the Plague arc, coupled with his unsuccessful negotiations with Miskwekepu’j that escalated the conflict, led to a test of his convictions. Some survivors held him accountable, and fans shared their criticisms as well. Many question whether his new happiness is deserved; given his role as the expedition leader, some believe he should bear more responsibility for the outcome.
It’s astounding to witness the evolution of Thorfinn’s character. From a war-torn orphan, driven by vengeance, he transformed into a man who had experienced immense loss, leading him to a profound realization that war is the root cause of all wickedness in the world, becoming a dedicated pacifist. Guiding his people on an epic expedition to discover the mythical land where their suffering would cease, Yukimura’s exceptional artwork beautifully captures this transformation over the course of twelve years.
Today marks the release of the climactic finale of my long-time read, ‘Vinland Saga’, specifically episode 220. I appreciate your patience and shared journey through this captivating tale.
With this, we reach the conclusion of Thorfinn’s prolonged journey. As a young one, he matured through numerous diverse encounters. My intention was to illustrate his developmental process, and I can’t help but question whether I managed to portray it effectively.
Einar’s Death Was Foretold Long Ago
A Necessary Sacrifice, Though Fans Are Not Ready To Accept It Yet

From an onlooker’s perspective, it appears that the circumstances surrounding this cherished figure’s demise could be murky, yet not overly complex to decipher. Einar was well aware of the dangers involved with venturing into uncharted Vinland and interacting with its inhabitants. Moreover, he understood the implications of being severed from their ancestral homeland, as it would eliminate any viable escape routes should things turn sour. However, despite these known risks, Einar remained steadfast in his faith in Thorfinn’s beliefs, aligning himself closely with them to such an extent that he was left emotionally shattered after taking a life for the first time.
Through Thorfinn’s parting words to Einar, it’s clear that the devastating impact of war is profound, even for someone who despised it as deeply as Einar did. Some fan interpretations suggest that losing Vinland and being forced into violence broke Einar so severely that he feared losing Arnheid again. This fear drove him close to self-sacrifice in a situation that might have been entirely avoided given a more favorable turn of events.
Wrapping up a saga that spanned over a decade, we’ve reached the final chapter, and while there were many unresolved threads, it still provided a strong resolution. It may not have been the ending fans had envisioned, but it was an extraordinary one nonetheless, leaving fans with a mix of bittersweet emotions, admiration, and lessons in morality. However, it seems that Thorfinn’s story might not be entirely over yet, as Yukimura hinted at more adventures to the east on the horizon. Here’s hoping we get to see those plans unfold into a substantial continuation soon.
