As the release date for “Pokemon Legends: Z-A” draws near, hints of Generation 10 are beginning to emerge. Being the first new generation specifically designed for the Nintendo Switch 2, Generation 10 games carry a significant responsibility given the contentious technical performance of “Scarlet and Violet.” However, if recent leaks turn out to be accurate, the upcoming generation may find itself in more controversy.
Based on a leak from 4chan regarding Pokemon Gen 10, it’s rumored that the upcoming games will feature a Grass-type horse resembling the Trojan Horse, a Fire-type phoenix, and a Water-type snake as starters. Although leaks from 4chan should be approached with skepticism, these forums have accurately predicted details of previous Pokemon games. The proposed Greek Island setting for the region could support these starter designs. However, what’s causing a stir is that these new starters seem to challenge the now-disproven Zodiac Theory for Fire-type starters, which might be seen as a nod to fans who followed this trend in the past.
Pokemon’s Alleged Gen 10 Starters Would Fill in the Zodiac Theory, But for the Wrong Types
Pokemon’s Fire-Type Zodiac Theory Has Already Been Disproven
Over the course of almost eight generations, a popular belief within the Pokemon community has been that every Fire-type starter corresponds with one of the twelve animals in the Chinese Zodiac. Out of these twelve, it appears that eight have quite evident counterparts among the Fire-type starters found in the Pokemon series.
- Charmander – Dragon
- Cyndaquil – Rat
- Torchic – Rooster
- Chimchar – Monkey
- Tepig – Pig
- Fennekin – Dog
- Litten – Tiger
- Scorbunny – Rabbit
- Fuecoco – N/A
- N/A – Snake
- N/A – Horse
- N/A – Ox
- N/A – Goat
In simpler terms, it was previously suggested that Fuecoco might symbolize a snake, but this seems far-fetched given that Fennekin and Cyndaquil are already considered to be dogs and rats respectively. The Zodiac Theory, which predicted certain types of Pokémon based on the zodiac signs, has been debunked following the release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. So, it was unlikely for Generation 10 to include a Fire-type starter resembling a snake, horse, ox, or goat as per the Zodiac Theory. However, if leaks are true and the Fire-type starter for Generation 10 is indeed a phoenix, then the Zodiac Theory would be completely discredited. Yet, there’s still a possibility that other starter types could fit into the remaining zodiac signs.
Leaked Grass and Water Starters for Gen 10 Would Cover Some of the Missing Zodiac Animals
The supposed new Grass/Fighting type Pokemon, modeled after the Trojan Horse and rumored to be from Greece, is said to be a horse. While horses like Ponyta and Mudsdale exist within Pokemon, none have been starters. If true, this would mark the first Grass-type horse starter. Additionally, this horse fits into the Fire-type starter Zodiac Theory as it addresses an existing gap for horses in that theory, although it’s not a Fire-type itself.
The rumored Water-type starter Pokemon is said to resemble a snake’s shed skin and possess both Water and Ghost types. This character could potentially evolve from a snake-like Pokemon, as Snivy from Generation 5 does. However, the series hasn’t seen a Water-type snake starter before this. Interestingly, this design aligns with the Fire-type Zodiac Theory, but it’s not a Fire-type starter itself. This could indicate that Game Freak is acknowledging the popular Starter Zodiac Theory and possibly teasing its validity, since two of the three supposed starters fit the theory, yet neither of them correspond to the Fire-type starter-the one required for the Zodiac Theory to hold true.
