An enthusiast of “The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker” was inspired by a school excursion to create a genuine, operational model of the game’s iconic boat, the King of Red Lions. Excited about their creation, this fan shared their innovative process on social media platforms, detailing the materials they utilized to bring the King of Red Lions to life for all to appreciate.
In the game titled ‘The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker’, Link embarks on a mission across the vast Great Sea. His goal is to locate the submerged kingdom of Hyrule and obtain the power necessary to defeat Ganondorf. During his maritime journey, Link encounters the King of Red Lions, a talking ship that becomes his companion following a failed rescue attempt at the Forsaken Fortress. Interestingly, the King of Red Lions is none other than King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule, the former ruler of the sunken kingdom of Hyrule beneath the Great Sea. Much like the Na’vi from ‘Ocarina of Time’, the King of Red Lions offers guidance and advice to Link as needed throughout his quest.
Zelda Fan Creates Real-Life Replica of the King of Red Lions
In a unique twist, rather than utilizing the recently popular game “Tears of the Kingdom” to craft boats and ships, a dedicated Zelda fan opted to build a real-life replica of the renowned King of Red Lions from “The Wind Waker.” English content creator Littlejem shared her creation on TikTok, sailing the vessel she painstakingly constructed over several weeks. Later, she released a detailed 30-minute YouTube video documenting the building process. Due to fluctuating sailing conditions, Littlejem noted that she had limited time to complete and test the King of Red Lions. The ship was assembled using a combination of recycled boat parts and 3D-printed materials, with an outboard motor attached to a kicker bracket mounted on the transom.
To make the King of Red Lions’ animated face, Littlejem employed a control board to input movements in its neck and jaw, which required much experimentation. Once most components were put together, Littlejem subsequently painted the vessel, using “The Wind Waker” from Switch 2 as a guide for accurately capturing the minute details.

Following the construction and painting of both the main sail and mast, the King of Red Lions was prepared for a trial journey. This journey was documented using drone footage. Although fans of Zelda have depicted the King of Red Lions in various other works of art, constructing Littlejem’s real-life replica of The Wind Waker’s distinctive boat proved to be quite challenging.
