The creator of the game “No Man’s Sky,” Sean Murray, has stirred excitement among its fan base by posting a series of cryptic emojis, leading some to speculate that a new expansion might be imminent. Since its lackluster launch in 2016, “No Man’s Sky” has undergone multiple free updates, transforming it into one of the most intricate and revered survival games available today. Some enthusiasts eagerly anticipate another significant content update in the near future.

Starting from its debut, No Man’s Sky has seen 31 content expansions named so far, all of which have been given free to players. In the first half of 2025, these updates have introduced deep sea exploration, fossil trading, town defenses for squadrons, citizen dilemmas, and a significant increase in stars and planets numbering in the billions – just to mention a few enhancements.

Murray’s Twitter activity has been somewhat subdued throughout August, with only a few posts marking the game’s ninth anniversary, promoting Youtooz-brand plush toys, and sharing screenshots and fan art. A post without any text on August 23 featured just a waving hand emoji, followed by another post the next day showing three additional hands. Historically, Murray has used such cryptic methods to build anticipation for major announcements. Given this pattern, it’s plausible that the head of Hello Games might be hinting at a new development related to No Man’s Sky. This has sparked excitement among fans who are speculating about what could potentially be unveiled in the future.

A widely believed notion is that Murray might be hinting at the imminent unveiling of a new content update for No Man’s Sky, as there have been no August updates following three smaller ones in July. The most recent significant update, titled Beacon, came out in early June and introduced settlements for the Autophage, one of the game’s robot races, along with several base-building features like upgradeable buildings and managing multiple towns simultaneously. Much like before the launch of Beacon, Murray posted a bacon emoji on Twitter prior to this update.

A significant number of enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the unveiling of the expansive open-world game titled “Light No Fire”. This game was first announced by Murray at The Game Awards 2023 over a year and half ago, presenting it as an exploration game centered around a single massive world instead of the 18.4 quintillion plus procedurally generated planets in No Man’s Sky. Since its initial trailer, there has been minimal information about Light No Fire, despite development having started at least six years ago. Given that No Man’s Sky took only four years to develop and launch, it’s plausible that fans might get a glimpse of Hello Games’ next major project soon.
