This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Final Saga.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that Monkey D. Luffy, the captivating protagonist of “One Piece,” has ascended to one of the series’ strongest characters due to his position among the Yonko. However, it wasn’t always this way for our rubbery hero; he had to work hard and overcome numerous challenges to reach his current might. A pivotal moment in his journey occurred during the Wano Country arc, when he unlocked an extraordinary power-the awakening of his Devil Fruit, which he proudly calls Gear 5.
Luffy’s Gear 5 transforms him into the Warrior of Freedom, a form that is extremely tough to overcome due to his creativity being the only real limit. However, Luffy’s Devil Fruit isn’t the most powerful in One Piece, and while his awakened form is potent, it doesn’t rank as the strongest. Yet, in One Piece, there exists a formidable Devil Fruit awakening that outclasses any other fruit, and interestingly enough, it belongs to one of the Sea’s Four Emperors – Blackbeard.
Devil Fruit Awakenings Are More Important Than Ever In One Piece

- Devil Fruit Awakenings Are Key In The Final Saga
- Oda Will Give The Strongest Awakening to Luffy’s Enemies
In the grand climax of the series “One Piece”, the awakening of Devil Fruits assumes great significance, a fact self-evident. These awakenings enable users to surpass all limitations set by the Devil Fruit, unlocking additional powers that may not conform to the characteristics of the fruit itself. For instance, Monkey D. Luffy has already undergone this transformation, which he refers to as Gear 5. Consequently, any formidable adversary in the Final Saga of “One Piece” should similarly possess such abilities to ensure a balanced contest.

It’s true that during the battle with Egghead, Rob Lucci had activated his Devil Fruit ability, and so did the Gorosei he fought. Kizaru, however, didn’t awaken his Devil Fruit, but their encounter was more of a test of endurance than a traditional fight. In Elbaf, Luffy will meet Imu, and given the nature of One Piece battles, it’s reasonable to expect a Devil Fruit awakening from him. Nonetheless, it is expected that Blackbeard holds the strongest Devil Fruit awakening in One Piece, due to his Yami Yami no Mi.
Blackbeard’s Yami Yami no Mi Awakening Is Far Superior To Luffy’s Gear 5
Blackbeard Can Shut Down All Devil Fruit Powers

Blackbeard is a formidable pirate, renowned for his fearsome powers in the One Piece world, and these abilities are frightening even before they’re fully activated. His fruit, the Gura Gura no Mi, has the potential to devastate the world with massive earthquakes, but that’s not its only power. He also possesses the Yami Yami no Mi, an ability that neutralizes the powers of other Devil Fruits.
With these two powers, I’m officially invincible! — Blackbeard
Blackbeard’s unique ability to neutralize other Devil Fruits involves getting physically close to his targets, which he achieves using Kurouzu. Once in contact, the target loses their ability to use their fruit. This is already quite overpowering, but with Devil Fruit awakening, it can escalate to an entirely new level of potency.
In simpler terms, when Blackbeard activates the Yami Yami no Mi, he can effectively neutralize Devil Fruit powers even without a direct interaction. By extending his power to the environment, any individual physically touching the ground within this affected area will find their Devil Fruit abilities temporarily deactivated.
Luffy Will Struggle Vs Blackbeard

Luffy usually depends greatly on his Gear 5 in battles against high-ranking pirates, such as Yonko, yet utilizing it against Blackbeard could be extremely challenging. Consequently, Luffy might find himself facing difficulties when confronting him. Luffy’s Gear 5 represents an immense transformation, but once Blackbeard activates his Yami Yami no Mi, he’ll reach a higher tier of power.
