My Hero Academia: Kohei Horikoshi’s Alternate Ending For Bakugo Katsuki Has Emerged

This article contains spoilers from My Hero Academia’s Epilogue.

The hit manga series “My Hero Academia” formally concluded in 2024, leaving fans eagerly anticipating additional details from creator Kohei Horikoshi about the post-Final War world. Considering the vast potential for exploration and expansion within the universe of “My Hero Academia,” this eagerness is entirely understandable.

Horikoshi has already elaborated on the conclusion of Deku and Ochaco, and at the same time, he let fans know that he modified the series’ ending for Deku and supporting characters. Since it was previously planned for Deku to remain Quirkless and not continue as a hero, fans are naturally curious about what Horikoshi has in mind for Bakugo Katsuki. Although the author didn’t specify Bakugo’s exact conclusion, he certainly hinted that it would have been significantly different from what we currently see.

Bakugo Would’ve Been Higher Ranked On Hero Charts

Bakugo Dropped To 15th In Hero Rankings

  • Bakugo debuted at the 4th rank and then fell to 15th
  • He is now the No. 5 Hero in Japan

Talking about Bakugo’s standing, it’s often noted that his position would have been much higher if not for his conduct. For those unfamiliar, Bakugo first appeared on the Hero Rankings Chart at the fourth spot, but subsequently fell to 15th place. This decline can be attributed primarily to Bakugo’s turbulent behavior and impoliteness. As a result of his actions, he lost significant ground in the rankings.

Subsequently, following Izuku Midoriya obtaining a new Hero Armor, Bakugo reclaimed his rankings. Eager to rival Izuku again, Bakugo redoubled his efforts and climbed back up to the 5th position, just below Izuku Midoriya.

In an alternate ending proposed by Horikoshi for “My Hero Academia,” Izuku was intended to remain Quirkless permanently, serving as a teacher instead. This would’ve prevented Bakugo from enjoying their competitive rivalry any further. Consequently, Bakugo’s Hero Rankings would have experienced significant changes. He might have stayed at the Number 15 spot, or even reached the top position if Horikoshi lowered his ranks to create a challenge for Izuku.

Bakugo’s Ending Is Heavily Influenced By Deku’s Changed Ending

Bakugo Could’ve Been The Number 1 Hero

In “My Hero Academia”, Bakugo’s ending could have taken a different turn if he hadn’t been burdened with guilt. Recall that Bakugo frequently tormented Izuku Midoriya in their childhood, but later deeply regretted his actions and made amends through various gestures, such as giving Izuku a Hero Armor as an apology. However, if Izuku were to renounce his aspirations of becoming a hero, Bakugo would need to find peace with himself and carry on Izuku’s ideals, striving for greatness in his stead.

It’s clear that Bakugo and Izuku’s final outcomes are intertwined, and altering Izuku’s ending significantly impacted Bakugo’s outcome as well. If not for this significant change, Bakugo would likely have been among the top Heroes in Japan or fighting for the top spot with Mirio at minimum.

Fans of My Hero Academia manga have enjoyed 431 chapters so far, all of which are available on Manga Plus. Regarding the anime, the final season is yet to come out this year and can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
