Even More Dragon Quest Remakes Are Reportedly Coming

Yuji Horii, the creator of Dragon Quest, has suggested that more remakes are planned for the series. Although Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is the next release, future remakes may focus on games from earlier in the series, before DQ7.

Square Enix revealed a remake of *Dragon Quest 7* during the recent Nintendo Direct presentation on September 12th. This updated version of *Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past* will be available on February 5, 2026.

Yuji Horii Hints at Dragon Quest 4–6 Remakes Being in the Works

During the September 15th livestream of “Yuubou and Mashirito no KosoKoso Housoukyoku,” Yuji Horii, the creator of *Dragon Quest*, suggested that more remakes are planned. Around the 44:45 mark, co-host Kazuhiko “Mashirito” Torishima asked Horii why Square Enix chose to remake *Dragon Quest 7* instead of the previous three games, which haven’t been updated recently. Horii explained that it was largely a matter of timing, saying, as RPG Site first reported, “a lot of things are moving around, but it was just done first by chance.”

Horii’s comments don’t guarantee remakes for *all* games in the second *Dragon Quest* trilogy, but they suggest that at least *some* are planned, and Square Enix is considering even more in the future. *Dragon Quest 7* might be getting remade sooner because the games *Dragon Quest 4*, *5*, and *6* are connected as the Zenithian Trilogy – they all feature the sky castle Zenithia. Updating these games together could be easier than doing them separately, as remaking just one of them wouldn’t make much sense story-wise without also updating the others, assuming the story remains largely the same.

Square Enix is updating *Dragon Quest 7* to make the story move faster. They’re doing this by cutting out side quests and content that don’t really affect the main storyline, but they’re also adding new scenes. The updated game will have improved graphics and gameplay, with more details about those improvements coming later.

A lot of things are moving around, but [the Dragon Quest 7 remake] was just done first by chance.

Just a quick update on the Dragon Quest series: the HD-2D Remake of Dragon Quest 1 and 2 is coming to PC and consoles on October 30th. The HD-2D Remake of Dragon Quest 3 launched in mid-November 2024 and was a huge success, earning great reviews and selling over 2 million copies in just three weeks. As for the next main game, Dragon Quest 12, we’re still waiting for news. Square Enix first announced it in 2021, and while they’ve confirmed it’s still being developed using Unreal Engine 5, they haven’t shared many details since.
