Devil Fruits are central to the world of *One Piece*, acting as the primary source of power for many characters. These mysterious fruits, found throughout the sea, give anyone who eats them unique abilities, but at the cost of being able to swim.
Devil Fruits have been a key element of the *One Piece* story from the very beginning, and over the past three decades, they’ve become even more powerful and varied. Because there are so many different Devil Fruits, fans have long wondered where they come from. The author, Oda, has suggested the possibility of a Devil Fruit tree as their origin.

For years, fans of *One Piece* have been wondering where Devil Fruits originally come from. While the creator, Oda, has shown us *how* these fruits are made, the mystery of their origin remains unsolved.
Luffy, you just ate a Devil Fruit! You won’t be able to swim again! — Shanks
During the Egghead storyline, Eiichiro Oda explained that Devil Fruits originate from people’s strong desires. Every Devil Fruit in the world of *One Piece* came about because of someone’s dream from the past. Essentially, Devil Fruits wouldn’t exist without these desires, meaning their creation involves someone transforming their wishes into a unique power.
The origins of Devil Fruits remain a mystery in the world of *One Piece*, but creator Eiichiro Oda provided a significant clue in an early draft of the story called *Romance Dawn*. This draft revealed the existence of a rare Devil Tree that produces the fruits. Luffy’s fruit is specifically stated to come from this tree, and it’s the source of his abilities.

Devil Fruits Must Have A Tree And It Is All Connected To The Forest God
The Harley Reveals The Truth About The Devil Fruit Tree
As a huge One Piece fan, I was already cautiously optimistic about Devil Fruit trees, but chapter 1138 totally blew that idea wide open! Oda confirmed in the latest SBS that the Forest God is the source of all Devil Fruit powers, essentially sending them out into the world. That means, around 800-900 years ago, there *had* to be a massive tree – or something like it – connected to this Forest God that created all the Devil Fruits we know and love! It’s such a cool confirmation and adds so much to the lore!
The Devil Fruit Tree Could Be In Marijoa
It’s likely the Forest God had the power to create a tree that grows Devil Fruits. However, fans also speculate that the location of this tree might already be known – potentially in the center of the world, specifically Marijoa. In fact, the Devil Fruit Tree could even *be* Marijoa’s National Treasure, something hinted at during the Dressrosa arc. It’s only a matter of time before the author, Oda, reveals more about it.
The next chapter of One Piece, number 1161, will be released next week on Sunday. While it becomes available in Japan at midnight on Monday, most fans around the world will be able to read it on September 28, 2025. The chapter will be available for free on Manga Plus.
