Summary
- Linda Cardellini will star in the Crystal Lake prequel series, but fans question if it’s necessary for the horror franchise.
- Show may explore Pamela Voorhees’ life before Camp Crystal Lake; fans wonder if this is compelling enough.
- Brad Caleb Kane leads production for Crystal Lake; Bryan Fuller left the project, but hinted at possible appearances by Jason Voorhees.
In contrast to the notorious slasher antagonist Jason Voorhees, donning a hockey mask, it’s Pamela Voorhees, portrayed by Betsy Palmer, who left a lasting impact in the first Friday the 13th film. She avenged her son Jason, who had been tormented, and interestingly, Ghostface refers to this Friday the 13th villain when he interrogates Casey Becker (played by Drew Barrymore) during the opening scene of Scream.
Enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating updates regarding the “Friday the 13th” prequel series, titled “Crystal Lake”, from studios A24 and Peacock. Notably, Linda Cardellini has been cast as Pamela Voorhees, and there is great curiosity about how she will portray this iconic character. However, it remains to be seen what the overall reaction of fans will be towards the prequel series.
Linda Cardellini Will Play Pamela Voorhees, But Is The Friday The 13th Prequel Crystal Lake A Good Idea?

Despite Linda Cardellini being a skilled actress recognized for her performances in shows like Dead To Me, Bloodlines, and Mad Men , some may argue that the upcoming Friday the 13th prequel, titled Crystal Lake, isn’t a fitting decision for the horror franchise. The main query is, what unique story will Crystal Lake offer that hasn’t been told before in this franchise? The established Friday the 13th slasher series has already delved into the background of Jason and Pamela Voorhees, as well as Jason’s bullying and unfortunate drowning in 1957.
Based on Deadline’s report, there’s speculation that Cardellini’s character Pamela in Crystal Lake will be a grieving mother who lost her special needs son, while also pursuing a career in music. Previously, she chose to forgo a singing career to raise her child, but now he’s gone. However, if Crystal Lake delves into Pamela’s life when Jason was a child, one might wonder if that would provide enough material for an entire season, let alone multiple seasons of a TV show.
In simpler terms, Pamela is famously recognized as one of the notable female antagonists in horror films due to her protective instincts towards her son. It seems that her character’s motivation might remain consistent in the upcoming series, but instead of being initially presented as a villain, it may unfold when counselors arrive for work at Camp Crystal Lake in the original Friday the 13th movie, leading Pamela to take on a killer role. The question remains whether the new show will reveal that she was a murderer all along, or if her transformation into a killer is explained by events involving Jason. If the series decides to delve into her becoming a killer because of what happened to Jason, horror enthusiasts might argue that they have already anticipated this twist based on their prior knowledge of the franchise.
What Are Some Of Linda Cardellini’s Roles?
- Lindsay Weir on Freaks and Geeks (1999-2000)
- Samatha Taggart on E.R. (2003-2009)
- Sylvia Rosen on Mad Men (2013-2015)
- Meg Rayburn on Bloodline (2015-2017)
- Judy Hale on Dead to Me (2019-2022)
- Margo Starling on No Good Deed (2024)
- voice of Elizabeth Bates on Creature Commando (2024)
Is it intriguing to find Pamela in the same setting of a summer camp, specifically Camp Crystal Lake or Crystal Lake, in the new movie? Keeping the main location consistent is logical, but it could potentially feel overly repetitive. Introducing flashbacks to Pamela’s life prior to the camp would add an engaging twist and depth to her character. However, one might question whether delving into Pamela’s backstory is essential for the storyline. The prequel could explore Pamela’s life before Camp Crystal Lake, explain her hiring there, and set up her desire for revenge. But it’s worth considering if such details are necessary for the fans of the franchise.
Fans who enjoy Friday the 13th are expressing uncertainty about the upcoming prequel, sharing their opinions on Reddit. As one fan put it:
I fail to see the necessity of a prequel series, given that the original film already covers the prequel events. Creating content that goes even further back seems like it would turn into a humorous depiction of a summer camp.
Another fan would be happy to see another entry in the franchise instead:
Provide us with a setting and an engaging ensemble of characters, and have Jason stir up some fun chaos.
What Did The Showrunner Say About The Friday The 13th Prequel Crystal Lake?

Come December 2024, I shared a post on Instagram regarding the progress of Crystal Lake, expressing that scripts were being drafted and finalized.
Initially, Bryan Fuller was involved with the project, but he departed in May 2024, and Kane took over as showrunner. Currently, Kane is responsible for writing, directing, and executive producing. During his tenure on the prequel, Fuller granted a few interviews, one of which was published on Fangoria.com in 2022.
No matter where we end up, whether it’s the depths of Hell or the vastness of outer space, I’m not implying that we definitely will do so. However, if we manage to last for ten seasons, I’ll certainly be advocating for a space adventure.
Although viewers are aware that Pamela Voorhees is primarily associated with Crystal Lake, might there still be a chance for the truly terrifying antagonist Jason Voorhees to make an appearance too? Fuller explained:
Don’t underestimate Jason… Throughout the series, you’ll likely recognize several recurring aspects of him!”
nother version for variety:
“Jason might surprise you… As the series unfolds, you’re bound to notice several reoccurring traits of his!
It remains uncertain whether Kane’s “Crystal Lake” will include the character of Jason Voorhees. Given his significant role in the slasher genre, it seems unlikely that he wouldn’t make an appearance at some point in the storyline.
