Recent leaks show that the development costs for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet were surprisingly high, reaching the same amount as it took to create the entire Pokémon Legends: Arceus game.
Over the past day, a huge amount of information about the Pokémon series has been leaked online, covering games from the past, present, and future. We’ve already learned about the next generation’s game, currently titled ‘Wind and Wave,’ and a plan for upcoming releases. Now, details about the downloadable content for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have also been revealed.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Expansion Brought In 6.15 Million Downloads
According to a recent report from CentroLeaks, developing the downloadable content (DLC) for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet cost far more than originally planned – reportedly as much as creating the entire game Pokémon Legends: Arceus. As a result, the development team decided to keep future DLCs smaller in scope and focused on keeping costs down. In the first ten months after release, the DLC sold 6.15 million copies, representing 25% of all Pokémon Scarlet and Violet game owners.
As a big Pokémon fan, I was really surprised to hear that the development costs for the Scarlet and Violet DLC actually ended up being as expensive as making Pokémon Legends: Arceus! It sounds like they really went all out. Apparently, going forward, The Pokémon Company is planning to keep future DLC a bit more manageable in terms of cost and scope, making sure the budget fits what they expect it to earn. Hopefully, that doesn’t mean less content, but it’s good they’re thinking about sustainability!

DLCs Became a Mandate After Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Expansion
A recent report from Centro detailed problems during the creation of the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet DLC, ultimately leading to a positive change. It appears the DLC wasn’t originally part of the plan, causing a technical issue during development. As a result, Game Freak has now instructed its developers to design all future Pokémon games with the possibility of DLC from the start, ensuring future expansions can be added more smoothly.
