It’s Official: Pokemon Has Beaten Digimon

Now that reviews are out, it appears *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* is receiving better scores than *Digimon Story: Time Stranger*. The long-standing debate between *Pokemon* and *Digimon* fans – which series is better – often concludes that *Digimon* has the stronger anime, while *Pokemon* consistently delivers better games. With both *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* and *Digimon Story: Time Stranger* launching in the same month, comparisons were bound to happen.

Both *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* and *Digimon Story: Time Stranger* are popular role-playing games. *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* is set in Lumiose City, a location within the Kalos region, and introduces a new real-time battle system. *Digimon Story: Time Stranger*, the newest installment in a series that began in 2006, uses a more classic turn-based combat approach. While *Digimon Story: Time Stranger* launched earlier this month to positive reviews and strong sales, *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* has currently received slightly higher overall review scores.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A Reviews Compared to Digimon Story: Time Stranger

  • Pokemon Legends: Z-A – 81
  • Digimon Story: Time Stranger – 78

Currently, Digimon Story: Time Stranger has a critic score of 78 on Metacritic, while Pokemon Legends: Z-A has an 81 – three points higher. These scores could change as more reviews come in for both games, but significant shifts are unlikely. Time Stranger already has a very high user score of 9.2, and it will be interesting to see how player reviews compare once Pokemon Legends: Z-A is released and has its own user score.

Okay, so looking at sales, I’m pretty confident *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* is going to sell a lot more copies than *Digimon Story: Time Stranger*. That doesn’t mean *Time Stranger* did badly though! It actually blew up on Steam, peaking at over 83,000 players at once. We don’t have the exact numbers, but it probably did pretty well on PlayStation 5 and Xbox too. Honestly, *Pokemon* just has way more name recognition. There’s been some drama around *Z-A* because of those recent leaks, but the good reviews should reassure anyone who’s unsure. Plus, *Pokemon Legends: Arceus* sold almost 15 million copies – that’s huge! I don’t know if *Z-A* will reach that level, but I’m expecting it to easily outsell *Time Stranger*.

While *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* is performing better than *Time Stranger* in terms of reviews and expected sales, the *Digimon* series is gaining popularity, which should help its next game surpass *Time Stranger*’s success. Currently, a new *Digimon* mobile card game is in development, but no console game has been announced. As for *Pokemon*, *Legends: Z-A* is launching soon, and the first games of Generation 10 are anticipated in 2026. If *Pokemon* and *Digimon* games are released so close together again, the competition will likely be even more intense.
