Banjo-Kazooie Co-Creator Leaves Rare After 36 Years

Gregg Mayles, a long-time employee of Rare and one of the people who made Banjo-Kazooie, is leaving the company.

Man, Rare in the 90s was just legendary. I grew up playing Battletoads, Banjo-Kazooie, Goldeneye, Donkey Kong Country – they were all amazing, and honestly, there wasn’t another studio doing what they did. When Microsoft bought them in 2002, things just weren’t the same, you know? They haven’t had as many huge hits since. And it’s really disappointing to see Everwild cancelled, especially with the director and creative director leaving now. Even though Sea of Thieves is cool, this feels like a real blow.

Gregg Mayles, Co-Creator of Banjo-Kazooie, Resigns From Rare After Everwild Cancellation

Today marked my last day at Rare. I want to thank everyone who played and enjoyed the games I worked on, and also all the talented people I had the pleasure of working with. It felt right to sign off with one last rhyme!

I was really sad to see the news that Gregg Mayles has retired from Rare! He announced it on X (formerly Twitter) with a poem, which is totally classic Gregg. Seriously, he helped *make* so many of our childhoods! He co-created Banjo-Kazooie with his brother Steve, which is amazing, but that’s not all! He also designed levels and games like Viva Pinata, Donkey Kong Country, Sea of Thieves, and even Kinect Sports. He’d been with Rare the longest of anyone, starting as a designer and working his way up to creative director. He’s leaving a huge legacy!

It’s unfortunate that his last project was Everwild, a game he led the design and direction of. Sadly, Everwild, along with Project Blackbird and Perfect Dark, was recently canceled. Just recently, some screenshots surfaced, offering a look at what the game could have been. With many of the key people who worked at Rare no longer there, the studio’s future is unclear, and hopefully things will improve. This news is particularly disappointing for fans who have been hoping for a new Banjo-Kazooie game.
