The Dragon Quest series is a classic that helped define many of the features we see in Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs) today, like going on quests and gaining experience to improve your characters. It wasn’t until the third game that players could finally create their own party and change character classes—called Vocations—before fights. Now, having a customizable party is a highlight of not just JRPGs, but role-playing games in general.
It’s exciting to wonder which new characters will appear and what special abilities they’ll bring – maybe magic, incredible strength, or healing powers! If you enjoy games with robust party systems, like many RPGs and JRPGs, these upcoming titles are definitely worth checking out.
Tales Of Xillia Remastered
Back In Action
- Planned Release Date: 10/31/25
- Planned Systems: PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S
Originally released for PlayStation 3 in 2013, Tales of Xillia is a highly-regarded game in the Tales of series. A new remaster will allow even more players to enjoy it. If the remaster maintains the quality of the original and avoids launch issues, it’s likely to be a great starting point for newcomers to the series.
The game features large, open environments that players can freely explore, connected by paths populated with monsters. Battles are fast-paced and action-oriented, and you control a team of four characters who can combine their attacks based on their relationships and abilities.
Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road
Goooooal!
- Planned Release Date: 11/13/25
- Planned Systems: PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S
Inazuma Eleven is a popular series of role-playing soccer games created by Level-5. The latest installment, Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road, is the most ambitious game in the series for a long time. It blends fast-paced, action-packed matches with strategic team management. While players can experience school life and build friendships, the highlight is definitely the exciting soccer gameplay.
In soccer games, you control players as you would in any sports title, but using special moves takes a bit more time. Building your team is a key element of the game, similar to how you’d pick teammates in a game like Final Fantasy 10‘s Blitzball.
Octopath Traveler 0
The Biggest Party To Date
- Planned Release Date: 12/4/25
- Planned Systems: PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S
One of the most anticipated upcoming RPGs, Octopath Traveler 0, stands out due to its large battle parties. Unlike previous games, players can control up to eight characters at once, seamlessly switching between two groups of four during combat. But bigger parties aren’t the only thing making Octopath Traveler 0 look promising.
The game introduces a town-building feature, something new to the series. Despite originating as a mobile game, this latest expansion appears to be the most expansive one so far, and it’s launching on many different gaming systems.
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave
To The Coliseum
- Planned Release Date: 2026
- Planned Systems: Switch 2
The new Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is the latest installment in the popular strategy series, and it’s introducing some fresh changes. Fire Emblem games are famous for letting players build teams of varied characters, each with unique classes – from strong, defensive knights to powerful, but fragile, mages.
The first trailer for Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave featured just four characters, each fighting alone. Though the game has a fresh setting inspired by ancient Greece and Rome, it likely won’t change the core gameplay much from previous Fire Emblem titles. We can expect it to still use a team-based system alongside its tactical battles.
Sea Of Remnants
Avast Ye RPG Lovers
- Planned Release Date: 2026
- Planned Systems: PC and PS5
Sea of Remnants is a new role-playing game that promises a wide variety of gameplay experiences. You’ll be able to recruit characters to join your team, though the details of its turn-based combat system are still being revealed.
I’ve been checking out this new game, and it’s heavily focused on pirate adventures – you can even sail the seas! But what really caught my eye is how unique the design is; I haven’t seen anything quite like it. They haven’t announced the exact release date or all the platforms yet, but it’s planned as a free-to-play title, and it’s definitely coming to PC and PlayStation 5.
Persona 4 Revival
Bringing Back An Old Friend
- Planned Release Date: TBA
- Planned Systems: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X
Following the success of Persona 3 Reload, Atlus is planning a remake of Persona 4, titled Persona 4 Revival. Details are currently limited, but the first trailer showed off some of the game’s locations, such as towns and classrooms, and a new look at the main character, Yu. That’s all that’s been revealed so far.
Although specific details like the release date are still under wraps, fans of the original game can expect the remake to feature a party system with turn-based battles. Core elements like collecting Personas, building relationships to gain allies, and leveling up by fighting monsters will definitely return. When the game finally launches, Persona enthusiasts will be among the first to play it.
Threads Of Time
Chrono Trigger Revival
- Planned Release Date: TBA
- Planned Systems: PC and Xbox Series X
For years, fans have asked Square Enix to bring back Chrono Trigger – whether through a remastered version, a simple re-release, or a complete remake. While Square Enix hasn’t updated the original game in a long time, independent developers have been creating games inspired by it. Sea of Stars is a popular example, and another upcoming game, Threads of Time, appears to be even more directly influenced by Chrono Trigger.
This RPG lets you travel between modern times, the prehistoric past, and the future. The game features a world map and a variety of characters, including warriors and mages, all detailed on the developer Riyo Games’ website. While the exact platforms haven’t been fully announced, it’s currently available for pre-order on Steam and the Xbox Marketplace, suggesting those will definitely be supported.
