This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf arc.
Ever since creator Eiichiro Oda revealed Imu’s existence, One Piece fans have been eager to see what Imu can actually do. As the series’ primary antagonist, it was expected Oda would develop the character further in the Final Saga, and that’s now happening as the story progresses into the Elbaf arc.
Just before the flashback to the Elbaf arc started, viewers saw a demonstration of Imu’s incredible power, easily defeating the entire nation of Elbaf. This was further emphasized in the Loki flashback, which revealed Imu battling legendary pirates like Rocks D. Xebec, Gol D. Roger, Whitebeard, Big Mom, Garp, and Kaido. Remarkably, Imu emerged from the fight without a single scratch, suggesting they are currently unbeatable. However, one figure is believed to be capable of defeating even Imu: Joy Boy.
Joy Boy Is The Only One Who Can Beat Imu
Rocks D. Xebec Stood No Chance
- Imu turned Rocks into his slave
- Rocks was ordered to kill his family
Ever since fans learned that Imu and Rocks D. Xebec had met, they were eager to see a major showdown between them. But the actual fight turned out to be surprisingly uneven. Even though Rocks possessed incredibly powerful Haki, Imu didn’t appear to be harmed at all during the battle.
Mu shall do nothing. Thou shalt go and kill your family. — Imu to Rocks D. Xebec, One Piece 1163
In One Piece chapter 1163, it was revealed that Imu defeated Rocks D. Xebec with a single attack and then used the Domi Reversi technique to enslave him. Now, it’s up to Roger and Garp to find a way to stop Xebec.
It’s obvious that Rocks wasn’t strong enough to defeat Imu, but Joy Boy likely is. Joy Boy lived during the Void Century and was the original user of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. He was part of a powerful kingdom that existed long ago and is considered the first pirate to ever sail the seas. More importantly, Joy Boy was incredibly strong – he was the Nika of the Second World in the One Piece universe. While Joy Boy fought Imu and the other ancient kings and ultimately lost, he clearly frightened them. We saw this firsthand in the Egghead arc when Imu visibly trembled upon feeling Joy Boy’s Haki.

Luffy Is The New Joy Boy And He Will Beat Imu
Elbaf Is Too Soon For Imu To Fall
It’s important to understand that “Joy Boy” isn’t a name, but a title passed down through generations. The previous Joy Boy wasn’t able to defeat Imu, but the current one – Monkey D. Luffy – is destined to succeed. Ultimately, only someone carrying the title of Joy Boy can defeat Imu, and Luffy will achieve this with the power of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika.
While a fight between Luffy and Imu is expected eventually, likely during the Elbaf arc of One Piece, it won’t happen anytime soon. Luffy still needs to become much stronger before he has a chance of defeating Imu, as the power gap between them is currently significant. The fight may even begin in Elbaf without a clear resolution, as Luffy needs further development before he can reach Imu’s level.
The next chapter of One Piece is scheduled to be released this week, as it typically is on Sundays. While it becomes available in Japan at midnight on Monday (JST), most international fans will be able to read it on October 26th. The chapter will be available to read for free on Manga Plus.
