After Amazon’s recent layoffs – impacting over 14,000 employees across the company and platforms like Twitch – the online game New World will halt development. The game will conclude with its tenth season and the latest Nighthaven update.
New World, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) created by Amazon Games, first launched on computers in 2021 and on consoles in 2024. It was originally announced as one of three games Amazon was working on, and it’s the only one that ultimately came to fruition, even though it shifted away from its initial plan of being a free-to-play game. Sadly, Amazon has now ended development and will no longer release updates for New World.

For an important update on New World’s future:

Hey everyone, so it’s official – the New World team just announced that they’re wrapping up development on the game. The recent Season 10 and Nighthaven update we got earlier this month will be the last one. They posted about it on the official website, and basically said that’s it for new content. It’s a little sad, but they really put a lot into that final update, so at least we’re going out on a high note.
After four years of updates and the release of the new console version, we’ve decided to stop creating new content for New World. The recent Season 10 and Nighthaven updates will be the last ones released for the game on both PC and consoles. This was a difficult decision, and we didn’t come to it lightly.
The Nighthaven and Rise of the Angry Earth updates are now available at no cost for players on PC. Aeternum will continue to be accessible through PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra. New World servers will stay online until at least 2026, and details about the game’s long-term plans will be shared soon.
Although the blog doesn’t mention it directly, the team experienced several layoffs as part of the large-scale cuts at Amazon today. Bloomberg reported that Amazon’s game development studios were particularly affected, especially those working on massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) like those at Amazon Game Studios. Unfortunately, this is likely just the beginning of negative news, as these layoffs put several projects currently in development at risk.
