This article contains spoilers for One Piece’s Final Saga.
Roronoa Zoro’s backstory is full of unanswered questions, but the biggest mystery surrounds his missing left eye. After the time skip, Zoro only had one eye, and surprisingly, none of the Straw Hat crew ever asked him about it, nor has the author, Oda, ever explained what happened. However, Oda actually revealed the reason for this in the manga some time ago.

Fans of One Piece understand that changes Eiichiro Oda makes to character designs, like Zoro closing his eye, are rarely just for appearances. These changes almost always have a deeper meaning and will become important to the story. While some thought Zoro’s eye was closed simply for a new look, that’s likely not the case. Oda closed Zoro’s eye because it will be a significant plot point in the Final Saga of One Piece.
You look like a blood thirsty demon. — Kaku to Roronoa Zoro in One Piece
As many fans are aware, Zoro lost his left eye during training with Dracule Mihawk, the world’s strongest swordsman, on Kuraigana Island. Something happened during their fight that caused Mihawk to take Zoro’s eye.
If Zoro’s eye injury wasn’t significant to the story, Eiichiro Oda would have explained it by now, particularly with repeated questions from fans and within the narrative. Oda actually told his mentor, Watsuki, years ago, when One Piece first started, that Zoro would eventually lose the sight in one eye.
In 2021, Watsuki once more inquired about the meaning of Zoro’s covered left eye, but Oda remained tight-lipped, suggesting a significant explanation is being kept secret.
Zoro’s Left Eye Holds Demonic Powers
Zoro Has Been Called A Demon On Many Occasions
It’s long been suggested that Zoro’s closed left eye is connected to a dark power within him. Throughout the series, Zoro has been repeatedly referred to as a demon – notably during the Enies Lobby arc when a demonic aura surrounded him, and during his fight with Kaku, where he was described as a bloodthirsty demon. He even briefly transformed into a six-armed figure, now known as Asura, which the author, Eiichiro Oda, officially identifies as a demon god.
Boy, don’t tell me, you have the Color of the Supreme King as well? — Kaido to Roronoa Zoro in Wano
Whenever Zoro accesses his inner darkness, his left eye glows. This strongly suggests a connection, and it’s reasonable to believe his left eye contains some kind of demonic power.
Zoro’s Eye Will Help Him Beat Mihawk
It’s clear that Zoro closing his left eye will be a significant advantage when he battles Mihawk. Eventually, Zoro will unlock a powerful inner strength, and mastering it will make him incredibly strong. Many fans believe this eye will be key to the fight against Mihawk, and Zoro will utilize it when the time comes.
The newest chapter of One Piece, Chapter 1165, will be released next week on Sunday. While it becomes available in Japan at midnight on Monday, most fans around the world will be able to read it on November 9, 2025. You can read the chapter for free on Manga Plus.
