Rumors suggest that World of Warcraft might soon introduce a new premium currency called Hearthsteel. Details are scarce, but current information points to a possible connection between Hearthsteel and the game’s upcoming Housing feature.

The upcoming expansion, Midnight, is bringing many new features to World of Warcraft, but players are especially excited about the new Player Housing system. Interestingly, this feature will actually become available before the full expansion release! Players who pre-order World of Warcraft: Midnight will be able to access Housing starting December 2nd with the launch of Patch 11.2.7.
Hearthsteel May Be a New World of Warcraft Premium Currency
There might be a hidden feature in the game that Blizzard hasn’t revealed yet. Data miners recently discovered over six in-game items in an early version of World of Warcraft: Midnight related to “Hearthsteel,” a new currency featuring a glowing symbol connected to the Housing system. Wowhead shared images of these items, which included individual Hearthsteel coins, stacks of coins, and coins stored in bags, pots, and chests.
These new items look a lot like the screens you see when buying premium currencies in games like Diablo 4 (Platinum), Hearthstone (Runestones), or Overwatch 2 (Overwatch Coins). Currently, World of Warcraft‘s closest equivalent is the WoW Token, which players can trade for in-game gold, a month of game time, or $20 in Battle.net credit. It’s possible that Hearthsteel will become an official premium currency for WoW, either for the entire game or specifically for the new Player Housing feature.
Blizzard hasn’t officially announced anything about Hearthsteel yet. They did mention during the 30th anniversary celebration that some home decorations would be available for purchase, but they didn’t mention Hearthsteel by name. They did state that most decorations will be earned through playing the game. For now, all we know is that players might see something called Hearthsteel in World of Warcraft at some point.
It’s unclear when players will find out how this new in-game currency, Hearthsteel, will work. So far, it hasn’t appeared in any test versions of the game or been mentioned by Blizzard. While an announcement could come with the beta or launch of World of Warcraft: Midnight, it might be quite a while before fans fully understand what Hearthsteel is for.
