North Korea isn’t a place most people associate with competitive video gaming, or esports. Because of its strict government and heavy censorship, North Korea remains largely unknown and shrouded in mystery.
A social media traveler visited Pyongyang, North Korea, and discovered a surprising scene: a busy gaming café filled with skilled esports players enjoying games like Counter-Strike 2. This visit helped to reveal a bit more about daily life in the country.
It goes against everything we’ve been led to believe about North Korea.
North Korea’s Gaming Cafés Look Fantastic
Sally Yin shared photos on social media of a modern gaming café located in Pyongyang, North Korea. The café looks very different from the typically bleak images often seen in Western media, which some have labeled as North Korean propaganda.
Sally explained that the café she discovered had only opened in April and initially catered exclusively to North Korean residents. Now, it welcomes both tourists and foreigners living in the country.
In April, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un toured a new recreation center and expressed his support for the facility, believing it would benefit young people in the community.
Visiting a gaming café in North Korea and playing Counter-Strike with local players was an amazing experience! They’re really good gamers, and it made the multiplayer matches incredibly enjoyable.

The gaming café offered over 70 games that players could enjoy. They could either pay for playtime as they went, or sign up for a membership. Popular esports games like Counter-Strike 2, Rainbow Six Siege, and Dota 2 were among the options.
Surprisingly, the café had games like Call of Duty and Far Cry, which often involve overthrowing oppressive regimes – a potentially ironic touch for a North Korean-run business. However, internet access and platforms like Steam were blocked within the café.
