Grand Strategy Game Is Blowing Up on Steam

Europa Universalis 5 is quickly becoming a huge hit on Steam, selling very well and attracting a large number of players at the same time. The Europa Universalis series, created by Paradox Interactive, has been a favorite among grand strategy game fans since the early 2000s. However, the impressive launch of Europa Universalis 5, the sixth game in the series, is still remarkable.

Data from Gamalytic shows the last game in the series sold over five million copies and has a ‘Very Positive’ rating from Steam users. Released in 2013, Europa Universalis 4 peaked in popularity in 2020 with almost 50,000 players online at the same time. But the newest game quickly broke that record, becoming one of the most popular strategy games on Steam within hours of its release.

Europa Universalis 5 Sets New Concurrent Player Record on Steam

Just after launching on November 4th, Europa Universalis 5 quickly became the most played game ever on Steam, with almost 78,000 players online at once. The strategy game even temporarily surpassed Arc Raiders in sales, which is impressive considering how popular Embark Studios’ shooting game is. Although Arc Raiders regained the number one position, Europa Universalis 5 continues to be a top-five bestseller on Steam.

Players are generally happy with Europa Universalis 5, with 72% giving it a “Very Positive” rating on Steam. Critics also seem to like the game, giving it an average score of 87/100 on OpenCritic. Many reviewers recommend it and believe it’s one of the best games in the series so far.

A key reason fans enjoy Europa Universalis V is its incredibly detailed world map. While the previous game also had a great map, Europa Universalis V goes much further, featuring more specific locations and landmarks that make the game world feel more real. Players have been impressed with Paradox Tinto’s work recreating almost the entire planet, including varied landscapes and geographical features that add depth to the gameplay.

Paradox Interactive’s strategy game Crusader Kings 3 recently saw a surge in popularity thanks to a free weekend offer on Steam. Now, though, players are focusing on Paradox’s newest release – a game that launched almost 12 years after its last installment in 2013. It will be interesting to see if this new game can hold onto its players and stay popular with ongoing updates and support.
