The new game Sonic Rumble is receiving mostly negative feedback on Steam, with a current rating of 36%. Before its release, the game, which is similar to Fall Guys, faced delays and some criticism. Many players now feel it needed more development time.
Sonic Rumble is a free-to-play online multiplayer game where players try to survive and gather resources. The main game mode pits 32 players against each other over three rounds, with the number of players cut in half each round as they compete to collect the most rings. There are also team-based Co-Op Battles against bosses and Special Rumble events that mix things up. As a free game, Sonic Rumble includes in-game purchases, and early feedback suggests players are most critical of this aspect of the game.
Sonic Rumble is cross-platform, currently available on PC, iOS, and Android devices.
Sonic Rumble Faces Review Bombing Upon Launch
The low Steam rating for Sonic Rumble seems to stem primarily from complaints about its aggressive monetization and elements that feel like players can pay to win. Several users report imbalances caused by purchasable items. For example, one player noted a significant advantage gained from a Metal Sonic skin that dramatically increased ring collection. Others criticize the game’s high prices and numerous ways to spend money, including expensive skins, multiple battle passes, randomized loot boxes, and a subscription service, all combined with repetitive gameplay loops typically found in mobile games.
Despite the criticism, some players still defend Sonic Rumble. Although they’re a small group, a number of Steam reviewers argue that the game’s microtransactions aren’t a major issue, or that you can still have fun without spending extra money. For example, Le Heartlight Queen wrote that microtransactions were anticipated and that Sonic Rumble is enjoyable even if you don’t spend any money.
It remains to be seen how Sonic Rumble will develop in the future. While the game’s initial reception has been underwhelming, especially after multiple delays, some, like Le Heatlight Queen, believe this was predictable. As a free-to-play mobile game, it needs to strike a good balance between making money and being enjoyable, and hopefully it can achieve that.
