Dan Houser, a co-founder of Rockstar Games and writer for popular series like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, recently revealed that the next Red Dead game would finally explain the famous ‘Gavin’ mystery from Red Dead Redemption 2. Players first come across this intriguing puzzle when they meet Nigel, a character who anxiously asks if the player has seen his friend, Gavin.
You’ll encounter Nigel six times throughout Red Dead Redemption 2: four times during the main story and twice in the epilogue. Each time you meet him, he’s increasingly worried about finding his friend, Gavin. Though Nigel believes Gavin was kidnapped, fans have come up with many theories over the past seven years suggesting there’s a deeper mystery behind his disappearance.
Dan Houser Says Red Dead Redemption 3 Would Have Solved RDR2’s Gavin Mystery
Lex Fridman recently interviewed Dan Houser and, around the 1 hour and 36 minute mark, asked a question that’s become a running joke online: “Have you seen Gavin?” Houser laughed, and Fridman then explained the popular mystery surrounding the character Gavin from the game Red Dead Redemption 2. Fridman detailed some of the leading fan theories, including the idea that Gavin and a character named Nigel are the same person with a split personality, or that Gavin is actually deceased and Nigel is simply in denial.
As a big fan, I was really fascinated to hear Dan Houser talk about the mystery of Gavin. Apparently, he personally thinks the answer lies somewhere between the two main fan theories – either Gavin doesn’t exist, or he just disappeared a long time ago. When they were writing the letter you find on Gavin’s body, Houser and Michael Unsworth, another writer on Red Dead Redemption 2, leaned towards one of those ideas. They even planned to reveal more about it in future games! It’s crazy to think they hadn’t fully decided if Gavin was dead or had simply run away from Dutch and the gang. They were leaving it open for a future game to finally answer that question!
Dan Houser left Rockstar Games in March 2020. While he thinks another Red Dead Redemption game will eventually be made, the new game might not follow the original plans he helped create. This means we might never get official answers to the questions surrounding characters like Nigel and Gavin.
