Take-Two Interactive’s recent earnings report shows that Red Dead Redemption 2 is now the fourth best-selling video game ever, based on the number of copies sold.
Rockstar Games is a leader in the gaming world, known for creating incredibly popular titles. They’ve recently achieved something special by having two games – Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 – rank among the best-selling video games of all time.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Has Sold Over 79 Million Units, Surpassing Mario Kart 8
Take-Two recently announced that Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold over 79 million copies worldwide, bringing the total sales for the entire Red Dead series to 106 million. Analysts also report that Red Dead Redemption 2 was the best-selling game in the US for the last seven years, based on revenue. Players can access the online portion of the game, Red Dead Online, either with their copy of Red Dead Redemption 2 or by purchasing it as a separate online-only version, which became available in 2020.
Mario Kart 8 used to be the fourth best-selling game ever, having sold 78.02 million copies on the Wii U and Nintendo Switch. Now, Red Dead Redemption 2 has moved into that spot. The top three best-selling games are currently Wii Sports (82.9 million copies, often bundled with the Wii), Grand Theft Auto 5 (over 220 million copies sold), and Minecraft, which leads with over 350 million copies sold.
I’m still amazed by Red Dead Redemption 2! It’s crazy to think it faced so much doubt during development with all the budget and time concerns. And honestly, the delay of GTA 6 is a bit worrying – I wonder how it’ll affect other big games in the works, like the Halo Remake, Gears E-Day, and the next Call of Duty.
