After 23 Years, One Piece Author Oda Finally Reveals Blackbeard’s True Goal

This article contains spoilers for the One Piece series.

Marshall D. Teach, better known as Blackbeard, is a central figure in the One Piece story. Although mentioned early on in the series, most fans didn’t anticipate how important he would become. He first officially appeared 23 years ago during the Jaya Arc, and his role has continued to expand. Recent events in the final saga have revealed a lot of key backstory about Blackbeard, including details about his unique and significant ancestry.

The Egghead arc revealed that Blackbeard’s ultimate goal is to become King of the World, and recent flashbacks in Elbaf, focusing on the God Valley Incident, have provided more details about this ambition. We learned that Davy D. Jones, Blackbeard’s ancestor, previously held the title of King of the World before Imu. These revelations are making Blackbeard’s motivations much clearer, and it’s becoming increasingly apparent that he, along with Luffy and Shanks, will play a key role in the story’s final arc.

Blackbeard Wants To Dethrone Imu And Become King

Davy D. Jones Was Usurped By Imu

  • Blackbeard aims to return the throne to the Davy Family
  • Blackbeard carries Rocks D. Xebec’s will

Many fans have long expected Blackbeard to be the ultimate enemy Luffy will have to defeat at the end of the One Piece story. Despite the introduction of Imu as a major final villain, a lot of people still think Blackbeard will be Luffy’s final, biggest challenge in the concluding saga.

Throughout most of the story, Blackbeard was shrouded in mystery, leaving fans with far more questions than answers. Oda deliberately kept his motivations, history, and true character hidden from readers.

Now, with the Final Saga, Eiichiro Oda is finally revealing the full story of Blackbeard (Marshall D. Teach), including his family history and ultimate ambition. In chapter 1107 of the One Piece manga, during the Egghead arc, Saint Saturn questioned Laffitte and Devon about what Blackbeard’s crew is truly after, and they simply replied: “The World.”

Okay, so things are becoming so much clearer now, especially when you think about what happened at God Valley during the Elbaf arc! It turns out Rocks D. Xebec revealed a huge secret – the truth about Davy D. Jones, Blackbeard’s ancestor. Apparently, Jones was actually the King of the World during the Void Century! But he was overthrown by Imu. Xebec even called Imu “the World,” which means Blackbeard isn’t just aiming for power – his ultimate goal is to defeat Imu and take back the throne that rightfully belongs to his family!

Blackbeard Will Fulfill the Will of Davy

Xebec Failed Where Blackbeard Will Succeed

Blackbeard is destined to be a major player in the final arc of One Piece, even if he isn’t the ultimate villain. He’s determined to finish what previous figures like Jones and Xebec started, and ultimately carry out the Will of D.

I’ve learned that Xebec was actually plotting to take down the World Government and defeat Imu, but personal issues forced him into a confrontation before he was prepared. It’s interesting because Blackbeard seems to be further along than Xebec ever was – he already possesses the Yami Yami no Mi, one of the Devil Fruits believed to be key to defeating Imu. It looks like Blackbeard, potentially alongside Luffy, has a real shot at succeeding where historical figures like Davy D. Jones, Joy Boy, and even Xebec himself, all fell short.

One Piece will have a break next week, and a new chapter (Chapter 1166) will be released on November 23, 2025. Fans can read it for free on Manga Plus.
