Wow, it feels like forever ago that Bethesda first announced The Elder Scrolls 6! It was at an event they don’t even have anymore! And just recently, Todd Howard let us know that even after seven years, the game is still a ways off. As a huge fan, it’s a little frustrating to hear, but I understand these things take time – I just really want to explore Tamriel again!
Bethesda’s head recently discussed the future of the Fallout series with GQ. While a completely new Fallout game is likely still a ways off—even further than a new Skyrim—fans have several things to enjoy right now. These include a special anniversary edition of Fallout 4, ongoing updates to Fallout 76, and the second season of the Fallout TV show on Amazon Prime.
The Elder Scrolls 6 Won’t Be Here For A While

Todd Howard knows that whenever he talks about Bethesda’s plans, everyone immediately wants to hear about The Elder Scrolls 6. GQ magazine pointed out that even in an interview about Fallout, Howard started by acknowledging that TES 6 is still years away, despite being in development for seven years.
Look, I get it, we’re all dying for a new Elder Scrolls game! Todd Howard actually said he’s feeling the pressure too, and that it’s going to be a while before we can even think about playing it. But he also wants us to be patient. He made it clear that they haven’t abandoned The Elder Scrolls for Fallout – in fact, the next Elder Scrolls is what Bethesda is working on right now, it’s their main priority!
Todd Howard says that while Bethesda is currently working on multiple Fallout projects, including Fallout 76, The Elder Scrolls 6 is the main focus of the studio. He also admitted that the wait between Skyrim and the next Elder Scrolls game has gone on for too long, even though he generally believes that both fans and developers benefit from taking breaks from long-running series.
According to Howard, Bethesda needed time to recharge creatively after making Skyrim, leading to the development of Starfield. But today’s games take much longer to create, meaning that break has stretched on longer than expected. That’s why, after seven years, we still haven’t seen any news about The Elder Scrolls 6.
While The Elder Scrolls 6 is still years away, Bethesda might surprise fans by announcing and releasing the game much closer together. Todd Howard, the game’s director, called the unexpected release of Oblivion Remastered a “test run,” and suggested they were pleased with how well it went, hinting at a similar approach for TES 6.
