Borderlands 4 Has Broken a Depressing Record on Steam

Only two months after it came out, Borderlands 4 has fewer players on Steam than previous games in the series had at the same point in their lifecycles. Steam Charts data shows that on November 10, 2025 – just before the two-month mark – the game had a peak of almost 20,000 players in a 24-hour period. Although that seems like a lot, it’s considerably lower than the game’s initial peak player count at launch.

Many players are likely unsurprised by the recent struggles of Borderlands 4. While designed as a game that would continuously update and engage players, it hasn’t managed to hold onto its audience very well. The current low number of players on Steam isn’t just concerning on its own – it’s significantly lower than what previous Borderlands games achieved after their release, showing a substantial loss of players.

Borderlands 4 Has Lost More Steam Players in Two Months Than Its Predecessors Did

As of November 10th, Borderlands 4 has seen a significant drop in players on Steam, with a 93% decrease in its 24-hour peak over the past two months. This decline is actually worse than what previous games in the series, Borderlands 2 and Borderlands 3, experienced during their initial two months after release – the latest game has lost over 10% more players.

We can’t get accurate player numbers for the first Borderlands game on Steam because it’s too old. However, it probably had fewer players than the newer games, so any initial drop in players likely wasn’t as dramatic as what Borderlands 4 experienced.

Borderlands 4:

  • All-time peak – 304,398
  • Two-month peak – 19,804
  • Percent lost – 93%

Borderlands 3:

  • All-time peak – 93,820
  • Two-month peak – 17,256
  • Percent lost – 82%

Borderlands 2:

  • All-time peak – 124,678
  • Two-month peak – 22,554
  • Percent lost – 82%

Several factors contributed to the recent drop in player numbers for the franchise’s Steam releases. First, Borderlands 4 started with a much larger player base than previous games, so a decline was expected. Second, the PC version of Borderlands 4 has had performance problems since launch, causing some players to stop playing on Steam.

Although the number of players on Steam isn’t the only measure of success for a game like Borderlands 4, it definitely shows how players are feeling about it. The release of the first downloadable content pack, “How Rush Saved Mercenary Day,” might bring back some of the game’s biggest fans.
