As 2025 winds down, with just a couple of months left, I’ve been reflecting on what a great year it’s been for anime. We saw some series that were already popular continue to thrive, and a bunch of new shows really break out. Some are even calling it one of the best years ever! While shows like Solo Leveling and Apothecary Diaries were big hits early on, and My Hero Academia is still going strong, the summer season really surprised me. It was definitely the slowest season, but Dandadan Season 2 absolutely blew up on streaming. Other series like The Summer Hikaru Died and Sakamoto Days also managed to stand out and capture a lot of attention.
Dandadan is Japan’s Most Streamed Summer Anime
While Summer 2025 wasn’t necessarily the most outstanding anime season ever, it still delivered several excellent shows. Throughout the summer, ABEMA’s viewership rankings showed us which anime series were the most popular.
As expected, Dandadan Season 2 is the most popular anime of the summer. The first season, which aired in 2024, was a huge success, and anticipation has continued to build for the second season. The anime remains high-quality, and the story is becoming even more engaging, particularly with the growing importance of its supporting characters.
Season 2 of Dandadan was a standout anime this year, and fans can’t wait to see what happens next. The season ended with a thrilling cliffhanger, leaving viewers eager for more.
The Top 5 Included The Summer Hikaru Died And Sakamoto Days
Although Dandadan was the most popular anime of the summer, several other shows also performed well. The Summer Hikaru Died was the second most-streamed series of summer 2025, and it’s easy to see why. Despite being a new show, its mix of psychological horror and romance has really impressed viewers, particularly in Japan.
This summer, Sakamoto Days has become the third most-streamed anime series. While the story is strong, the anime adaptation hasn’t been the best. Despite this, it’s still performing well. The Water Magician, a new fantasy series, ranks fourth, and the second season of Kaiju No.8 comes in at number five.
Takopi’s Original Sin Didn’t Make The Top 5
Although the most popular summer anime list is strong, many fans were surprised not to see Takopi’s Original Sin included. It was widely predicted to be a top contender, especially since it’s been one of the highest-rated anime of 2025. While Takopi’s Original Sin is popular, it hasn’t reached the top streaming numbers – likely because it only has six episodes.
Overall, 2025 was a great year for anime, though the summer season wasn’t as strong as the others. While shows like Dandadan Season 2 were good, nothing truly exceptional came out during the summer months. The year started strong with the release of Solo Leveling Season 2, which generated a lot of buzz online, and the return of The Apothecary Diaries was also a hit with fans. Other popular anime this year included Dr. Stone, Fire Force, Wind Breaker, and MHA Vigilantes. The fall season brought even more favorites like One Punch Man, My Hero Academia, and Spy x Family, making 2025 a memorable year for anime fans.
