This article contains spoilers from the Boruto series.
The current arc of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is successfully addressing major issues from the first part of the series, and viewers are responding positively. Unlike the earlier storyline, which lacked world-building, this new arc features extensive travel across the ninja world. More importantly, Boruto is now focusing on developing its supporting characters, giving them more attention and screen time.
The world of Boruto is full of powerful ninjas, and many fans believe some deserve more attention. Fortunately, the series creator, Mikio Ikemoto (working with supervisor Masashi Kishimoto), plans to bring back a legendary ninja: Kakashi Hatake, the Sixth Hokage. Kakashi is incredibly powerful and will likely play a crucial role in the story, especially with Konoha facing a crisis involving Boruto Uzumaki’s betrayal.
Kakashi Hatake Could Return In Boruto Very Soon
Kakashi Hatake hasn’t appeared in the Boruto storyline yet, but that might be about to change. Konoha is currently without a Hokage; while the Seventh Hokage is presumed dead, and Shikamaru is acting as leader, he’s resisted taking the title of Eighth Hokage despite strong encouragement. Essentially, Konoha is operating without an officially appointed Hokage right now.
It’s natural for each new generation to be stronger than the last. That’s simply how things are in the ninja world. — Kakashi Hatake
Things get even more complicated because Shikamaru is being accused of betrayal, potentially losing his position and influence. If he’s removed from power, Konoha will need a new leader, and Kakashi Hatake is the only one with enough experience to take on the role. In fact, the author, Ikemoto, had already been planning Kakashi’s return for a while, and shared his thoughts on the matter.
Are there any Naruto characters who haven’t been in Boruto yet that you’d be excited to design as older versions of themselves?
It would give away too much to say, but it’s strange that Kakashi-sensei, despite being so well-liked, doesn’t appear in many scenes. It’s a real puzzle, and I can’t really talk about why.
Kakashi Might Be Konoha’s Next Hokage
Although many fans might not expect it, Kakashi Hatake is a strong possibility for the next Hokage. This wouldn’t be unusual; when the Fourth Hokage passed away, Konoha temporarily returned to the Third Hokage’s leadership instead of appointing a Fifth Hokage right away. In the same way, Konoha would likely ask Kakashi to serve as Hokage again until a suitable young candidate is ready to take on the role.

Boruto’s Lack Of Attention To The Old Cast Needs To Be Addressed
Having Kakashi become the next Hokage would be a great move for the Boruto series right now. While the Two Blue Vortex arc has improved the story significantly, one problem remains: not enough focus on the original characters. Bringing Kakashi back into the spotlight would help solve this, and fans are eager to see how he’d lead the village as an older, perhaps less powerful, but much wiser leader.
The next chapter of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, chapter 28, will be released on November 20, 2025, at 10 AM Eastern Time / 3 PM UTC. Fans can read it for free on the Manga Plus and Shonen Jump apps.
