Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind the Tomb Raider series since 2003, has announced another round of layoffs, impacting almost 30 developers. This is the third time in 2025 that the studio has reduced its workforce, and it’s raising concerns among fans about the development of the next Tomb Raider game.
The original Tomb Raider game came out in 1996, created by Core Design. Since then, several different studios have developed games in the Tomb Raider series, including Aspyr, Eidos Montreal, and Square Enix Montreal. However, Crystal Dynamics has been the lead developer for the longest period, working on the games from 2003 to 2017 and again from 2021 to now. They are currently working on the next Tomb Raider game, but a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
Crystal Dynamics Cuts Developer Jobs Again
Despite nearly three decades of success, Crystal Dynamics has announced another round of layoffs – its third in under eight months. A recent post on the company’s LinkedIn page revealed that around 30 more positions have been eliminated across different teams and projects as the company restructures for the future. Crystal Dynamics assures players that these difficult job cuts will ultimately improve the next Tomb Raider game, which will be published by Amazon Games. The company also stated it will provide support and resources to help departing employees find new opportunities.
In 2025, Crystal Dynamics had two rounds of layoffs. The first, in late March, eliminated 17 positions, though it’s unknown which projects were impacted. A second round occurred in August, but the company hasn’t revealed how many jobs were cut, leaving the total number of job losses for the year unclear.
The layoffs in August also meant the cancellation of the planned remake of Perfect Dark, which was first revealed in late 2020. The game, intended for Xbox Series X|S and PC, was being co-developed by Crystal Dynamics and The Initiative, and had reportedly been in the works for over ten years. The cancellation led to the closure of The Initiative studio. Although Amazon has stated the Tomb Raider game is still on track, fans have reacted to the news with both sadness for those who lost their jobs and worry about the future of the Tomb Raider franchise.
