Best Unsolved Mysteries in the Red Dead Redemption Series

The Red Dead Redemption games offer immersive Wild West experiences, but they’re also filled with strange and unexplained supernatural events that are just as captivating as the stories of John Marston and Arthur Morgan. Many of these mysteries remain unsolved, and players are still actively trying to figure them out. While Rockstar Games hasn’t provided official explanations, several interesting theories attempt to shed light on these unsettling events. Here’s a look at some of the most compelling unsolved mysteries in the Red Dead Redemption series!

Pleasance Was Abandoned

A Most Unpleasant Settlement Steeped in Sin

  • Location: Scarlett Meadows, Lemoyne

Lemoyne is a generally unsettling place, but the abandoned town of Pleasance is particularly creepy. Founded in 1883, it was quickly deserted. A large graveyard holds the remains of ten people of various ages, all murdered in September of that same year – a clear sign of a massacre. While the cause of the massacre remains a mystery, the town’s history is what’s truly captivating. The decaying buildings are covered in ominous graffiti like “UNCLEAN SINNERS” and “ILL WITH SIN”, and a locked barn bears the chilling warning “STAY OUT PLAGUE”.

Everything suggests something terrible happened in this town. It’s possible Pleasance was founded by people who committed great sins, and now those sins have returned as a deadly plague. We need to find out if the infected are being kept in the barn, and if this plague is somehow connected to the zombies. The town’s church lacks any Christian symbols, hinting that the residents may have worshipped Satan instead of God. Just south of town, the massive corpse of a serpent hanging from a tree further supports this idea. Perhaps this serpent was a tool of Satan, influencing the town until the settlers either died or abandoned it, leaving the creature to starve?

The Ghosts of Lemoyne

Plenty of Ghosts Haunt Among Us

  • Location: Bluewater Marsh, Bolger Glade, Lemoyne

We know most of the story of Agnes Dowd, the ghost who haunts Bluewater Marsh in Lemoyne, but many details about her life remain a mystery. If you’re courageous enough to explore the marsh on a foggy night between 11 PM and 4 AM, you might hear – and even see – her. Arthur Morgan will even record what he witnesses in his journal. By repeatedly visiting Agnes over several in-game nights, you’ll discover how she fell in love with a married man, how her fiercely protective father killed him, and how this tragedy drove Agnes to madness. She ultimately killed her own family before taking her own life, along with her unborn child. Now, Agnes’ spirit is forever tied to the marsh where she died. It’s a mystery why she can’t find peace, and why she’s the only ghost players can actually see. The reasons for her lingering presence, and why she remains unresponsive to player interaction beyond her mournful cries, are still unknown.

Players can encounter a mysterious Ghost Train at 3 AM near the entrance to Lemoyne, and no one knows why it appears. It doesn’t seem to be connected to any accident or trapped spirits – it simply appears. Some believe it might represent the souls of the departed, heading to the afterlife. This is just one of the game’s ghostly mysteries; between midnight and 4 AM, you can also hear the voices of General Quincy T. Harris’ soldiers at Bolger Glade, which can be quite startling.

Francis Sinclair, the Time Traveler

A 1930s Time Traveler Who Has Been to the Past, Present, and Future, But How?

  • Location: Big Valley, West Elizabeth

In West Elizabeth’s Big Valley, players will encounter Francis Sinclair, who starts a quest called “Geology for Beginners.” This quest asks you to locate 10 hidden Rock Carvings. Sinclair is a strange fellow – his clothing and way of speaking are from the 1930s, not the 1899 setting of the game. These carvings are unsettling and hint at a future Arthur Morgan will never experience, depicting things like angels, nuclear explosions, and futuristic cities. The mystery of who created them is puzzling, and completing the quest by finding all 10 carvings and returning to Sinclair only deepens the enigma.

Returning to Francis Sinclair’s home, players discover only a widow and a baby—a baby with the same unique birthmark as Francis himself. This suggests Francis was a time traveler who successfully returned to his own time, or perhaps even traveled to the past or future. Large drawings found in his room show he’s journeyed to various points in time, including the future and Ancient Egypt, but the method behind his travels remains a complete and baffling mystery.

The Strange Man – Who Is He?

An Accountant, the Devil, God, or Something Else?

  • Location: Bayall Edge, Lemoyne

The Strange Man is one of the most puzzling figures in the Red Dead Redemption series, seemingly following John Marston’s journey throughout both games. He’s clearly not a normal human, possessing an uncanny knowledge of John’s past – even things John himself has forgotten. This extensive knowledge extends to people John doesn’t even know, and the Strange Man often presents John with difficult choices, almost as a test of his character and free will. John’s frustrated cry of “Damn you!” and the Strange Man’s chilling reply, “Many have,” hint at a deeper, possibly sinister nature. While some believe he might be a divine figure, others suggest he could be the Devil himself.

The mysterious figure at the heart of Armadillo’s plague appears deeply connected to the town’s misfortune. Inside a cabin, a chilling message is carved into the walls: “I offered you happiness or two generations. You made your choice,” hinting at a deal with Herbert Moon – the only resident unaffected by the plague, who keeps a picture of the Strange Man on display. What’s particularly unsettling is that when John visits the cabin with the Strange Man’s portrait, the figure can be seen watching him in the mirror, only to vanish when John turns around. It’s unclear if the Strange Man was ever a normal person, and if not, what he’s become. He seems to know John’s past and future, and his cabin holds many secrets, yet reveals nothing concrete – much like another inscription within the cabin: “I gave everything for art, and I learned too much and nothing at all.

Aliens in the Wild West

Close Encounters with Flying Saucers Prove We Aren’t Alone in the Universe

  • Location: Hani’s Bethel, Heartland Overflow, New Hanover

Red Dead Redemption features supernatural elements like ghosts and demons, but it also includes something truly strange: UFOs. Players can encounter flying saucers and evidence of aliens who have mastered space travel. You can witness this yourself by visiting Hani’s Bethel, a cabin located in the Heartland Overflow region of New Hanover. The cabin contains several corpses, but if you return at 2 AM, a UFO will appear in the sky above. However, if you try to look at it directly from outside, it will vanish quickly.

The cabin holds a dark secret: it belonged to a strange cult that followed teachings from a pamphlet called the Mysterious Sermon. The bodies found inside suggest the cult members committed suicide believing they would join with aliens, and now those aliens have come for their souls. The idea of UFOs appearing in the Old West is frightening enough, but perhaps there’s more to the story than meets the eye…

The Locations of Gavin and Isabeau Katharina Zinsmeister

The Missing Characters of Red Dead Redemption 2

In 1884, Princess Isabeau Katharina Zinsmeister of Luxembourg vanished from her family’s hunting lodge in the U.S. and was never found. The only trace of her is an old reward poster displayed at the Van Horn Trading Post, a haunting reminder of her disappearance and her family’s lasting sorrow. Players have long been fascinated by Isabeau, hoping to find and rescue her as if she were part of a typical bounty hunt. However, it’s almost certain she’s either deceased or living under a new identity. Although game files contain a model of what she might have looked like as an adult, her complete absence from the game strongly suggests this character was cut from the story, and the reward poster remains a permanent, unsolved mystery.

The story also includes Gavin, Nigel’s close friend, who has been missing for years. Nigel, a man from Britain, feels lost and out of place as he searches the Wild West for Gavin. Gavin’s disappearance remains a mystery – it’s possible he never existed, or simply didn’t want to be found by his devoted, but perhaps overbearing, friend. Ultimately, the truth about what happened to Gavin will likely remain unknown.
