Ubisoft had started developing a new Splinter Cell game, but ultimately decided to scrap the project before making any official announcement.
Nick Herman, co-founder of AdHoc Studio, recently discussed the origins of their game, Dispatch, and the unusual circumstances that brought the studio together in an interview with Jason Schreier at Bloomberg.
In 2017, Herman joined Ubisoft along with his AdHoc cofounders, Pierre Shorette and Dennis Lenart, and relocated to the company’s San Francisco office. They immediately began working on the new Splinter Cell game.
Herman explained to Schreier that he was thrilled to contribute to the project and bring it back to life, as it hadn’t been active for some time. He and the team believed they could create a compelling story that fans would really enjoy.
Sadly, the game didn’t progress much. After only a few months of development, Ubisoft began changing its direction, and it became clear the game was likely to be cancelled.
Herman explained that the first six months on the job were thrilling, as they believed they were building something special. However, he added that it quickly became apparent that the things he valued weren’t priorities, which he described as a frequent experience in the gaming industry.
After Ubisoft cancelled the project, Herman, Shorette, and Lenart decided to leave and, in 2018, they co-founded AdHoc Studio with Michael Choung.
Although a new Splinter Cell game hasn’t been released since 2013’s Blacklist, the series isn’t over. Ubisoft is currently remaking the first Splinter Cell game, and as of late 2024, they were still aiming for a 2026 release. However, there haven’t been many updates about the remake recently.
Ubisoft has recently made some significant changes, including a new partnership with Tencent, the creation of a new company division, and a last-minute postponement of its financial report release.
