PlayStation Has Made Over $1 Billion On Steam, Firm Claims

Okay, so it looks like Sony’s move to put PlayStation games on Steam is actually working out really well! I just read that they’ve made over $1.2 billion since they started doing that – that’s a ton of cash from their first-party games being available on PC. Definitely a smart move, I think.

Alinea Analytics’ recent report highlights the strong performance of PlayStation Studios games. The reported figures reflect sales after Valve has taken its share.

The company estimates that total revenue has exceeded $1.5 billion. Sony earned $1.2 billion of that, and Valve has made at least $350 million. Valve’s share of the revenue starts at 30% of sales, then decreases to 25% after a game earns $10 million, and further to 20% after $50 million in sales.

Even though Valve is making money from these games, as a PlayStation fan, I think Sony has to be really happy with how well their games are doing on Steam. It’s great to see them reaching a wider audience and clearly making a good profit!

Five Games Lead The Way For PlayStation On Steam

According to a report by Alinea, Helldivers 2 is now the best-selling first-party game on Steam, though Sony hasn’t fully verified all the numbers. Since launching in February 2024, it’s sold 12.7 million copies. Horizon Zero Dawn comes in second with 4.5 million copies sold, followed by God of War at 4.2 million, Days Gone at 3.4 million, and Spider-Man Remastered at 2.7 million.

While PlayStation games have been popular on Steam, Alinea notes that initial excitement seems to be fading.

According to Rhys Elliot, head of market analysis at Alinea, most of the people who were initially eager to try these games have already done so. It’s typical for later releases to appeal to a smaller group of players, and our data confirms that trend.

Alinea’s data shows that PlayStation games sold better when they initially became available on Steam. For instance, the original God of War sold 2.5 million copies within 427 days – 2.5 times more than its sequel, God of War Ragnarök, sold in the same period.

We also tracked sales of the Spider-Man games. Over the first 294 days, the original Spider-Man game sold twice as many copies as Spider-Man 2.

It’s unclear if the recent decline in game purchases is a temporary dip or a sign of a larger problem. There’s talk that Sony might change its approach to releasing PlayStation games on Steam, but early revenue numbers suggest they could be losing out on significant profits if they did.
