Gearbox has announced a new Bounty Pack for the upcoming Borderlands 4, and is giving away the first one for free. Fans had been eager for news about Borderlands 4, so this was a welcome surprise – not only did Gearbox share an update, but they also released the free Bounty Pack as a thank you to players.
Originally planned as a paid add-on, “How Rush Saved Mercenary Day” was released as a free gift to players in Borderlands 4. This smaller DLC lets you celebrate the fictional Mercenary Day holiday and battle a villain called Mister Screw. Rush, the leader of the Outbounders, plays a key role in the story, and players can earn new items like character skins, weapon attachments, vehicles, and four unique legendary weapons that can be re-rolled for different perks. Some players who purchased special editions of the game, like the Deluxe or Super Deluxe Editions, initially felt like they were missing out on one of the included DLC packs.
Borderlands 4 Adding a Bounty Pack 5 as Future DLC
Originally planned as paid downloadable content for Borderlands 4 and included in certain special editions, Bounty Pack 1 will now be released for free. To ensure players who purchased the Deluxe or Super Deluxe Editions, or the Bounty Pack Bundle, still receive the promised amount of premium content, Gearbox will add a fifth Bounty Pack, expected in 2026. This means owners of those special editions will ultimately receive a total of five Bounty Packs.
Gearbox’s confirmation should reassure players who were concerned they weren’t getting the content they paid for. The change was actually foreshadowed in an updated roadmap for Borderlands 4, originally planned for 2026. The roadmap now includes the previously paid Bounty Pack 1 as a free update and indicates more content will arrive after the first quarter of 2026.
After Borderlands 4 launched, Gearbox’s first downloadable content was a Halloween event called Horrors of Kairos. While previous Borderlands games have had similar events, fans weren’t impressed with this one, finding it lacked depth and offered limited gameplay. The event mostly involved repeatedly fighting random world bosses for rewards that weren’t very valuable. Now, players are hoping the upcoming Bounty Pack will deliver the more substantial content that Horrors of Kairos didn’t provide.
Many players felt that the late-game content in Borderlands 4 became repetitive, with limited activities beyond a weekly mission and replaying the same boss. Bounty Pack 1 aims to address this by adding more to do, and December will bring an even bigger challenge: the first Invincible Boss. This free update, called Bloomreaper, will introduce a powerful new boss with the chance to earn unique legendary weapons. It will also add a new difficulty level to Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, allowing dedicated players to further refine and test their character builds.
