According to a reliable source within the gaming industry, we might finally hear about Half-Life 3 before 2026. This news comes as excitement for the long-awaited game is higher than it’s been in 17 years, according to publicly tracked data.
Rumors about a new Half-Life 3 game began circulating in August 2024 after GabeFollower, a prominent data miner, found evidence of the game within the code of other Valve titles. Over the following months, several people familiar with the industry confirmed that Valve was working on another version of Half-Life 3, and some believe this attempt has gotten further along than any previous effort. Mike Straw, a senior editor at Insider Gaming, repeatedly stated that Valve was planning a significant announcement soon after revealing the new Steam Machine in mid-November, later clarifying on November 20th that he was specifically referring to Half-Life 3.
Insider Doubles Down on Half-Life 3 Announcement Timing Claim
During a recent appearance on the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast, Straw firmly stood by his prediction for the announcement of Half-Life 3. Starting around the 30-minute mark of the November 21st episode, he repeated his confidence that the game will be revealed within weeks, before 2025 ends. Straw explained he’s actively trying to confirm the specific announcement date, but it’s proving difficult to pinpoint.
Valve Is Reportedly Trying to Weed Out Half-Life 3 Leakers
A reporter received a possible announcement date from one source, but hasn’t been able to confirm it through other means, so he’s holding off on publishing it. He believes Valve may have deliberately shared different dates with various people to catch anyone leaking information. This ‘canary trap’ method – providing false information to identify leaks – seems to have been used by Valve before. A similar situation occurred with the VR game Half-Life: Alyx, where many incorrect dates appeared online before the official November 2019 announcement.
Half-Life 3 Most Likely Won’t Be Announced at The Game Awards 2025
Despite still hoping to hear about Half-Life 3 before the year ends, Straw doesn’t think an announcement will come at The Game Awards, the biggest gaming event left in 2025. He suggests Valve could show the game at the event, but only if it’s already been officially revealed beforehand. This makes sense, as a major reveal like Half-Life 3 might steal the spotlight from other games featured at the show—something other publishers, who spend a lot of money to be included, would likely dislike.
Half-Life 3 Hype Is at a 17-Year High
Interest in “Half-Life 3” is surging worldwide. Google Trends shows searches for the game are at their highest point in 17 years, reminiscent of the excitement around the unreleased Half-Life 2: Episode Three back in 2008. Wikipedia pages for the Half-Life series have also seen a big increase in views since mid-November 2025, according to Wikipedia’s own data.
