One intriguing yet unexplored facet of the world in One Piece is the background of pirate families. As one might guess, there’s no set pattern here. Some pirates are offspring of government officials or the wealthy, their piracy often serving as a form of rebellion. Conversely, others hail from less privileged circumstances and resort to crime for the prospect of wealth.
It’s not common for pirates to have parents who were also pirates, but there are exceptions. The details behind these instances can vary, but frequently, the relationships between them might be less developed because of what being a pirate involves. However, they all followed in their parents’ footsteps and embarked on the sea.
1. Usopp
Son Of Yasopp
- Their relationship: They respect each other, but also have not seen one another for many years
Yasopp is a highly skilled sniper whose shots can be potentially lethal for the enemy. Initially appearing in the series as one of the first pirates, he later became friends with a young Monkey D. Luffy and his comrades from the Red Hair Pirates during their stay at Foosha Village. Since then, the crew has grown significantly in reputation, with their leader, Shanks, being recognized as one of the four most powerful pirates, known as the Yonko, who pose a significant threat to the government. Within this crew, Yasopp holds a senior position. However, his path was not without personal costs. He chose to leave behind his wife, Banchina, and their son, Usopp, while he embarked on his sea voyage.
Despite Yasopp leaving them, neither Banchina nor Usopp harbored resentment towards him for deserting. Instead, they felt immense pride in him. Yasopp reciprocated this pride and was proud of his child. Luffy, without being prompted, recognized Yasopp due to the numerous stories Yasopp told about having a son around Luffy’s age. Later on, Usopp became a member of the Straw Hat Pirates, embarking on many adventures with them. Eventually, Luffy would earn the title of Yonko. Shanks feels that their reunion with Luffy should happen soon, but Yasopp, after years apart, is somewhat apprehensive about meeting his son again.
2. Portgas D. Ace
Son Of Gol D. Roger
- Their relationship: Roger did not want Ace’s life to be affected by his reputation. Unfortunately, that ended up happening anyway, and Ace is negative towards his father as a result.
I, an ardent admirer, recount the tale of Gol D. Roger, a legendary pirate captain revered by countless seafarers who sailed alongside him. His name echoes affectionately among those who knew him during his lifetime, and even his adversaries acknowledge a tinge of respect for his unparalleled prowess. My crewmates and I were fortunate to sail with the King of Pirates himself as he discovered the fabled treasure known as One Piece.
His execution served as a beacon, enticing many with the tantalizing allure of his fortune. However, it would be a misnomer to claim universal adoration for him. The general public regarded him as a menacing outlaw, pirates who faced losses at his hands bore resentment, and the World Government, which sought his demise from the start, harbored animosity towards him. Roger left behind a legacy of both love and enmity.
An intriguing voice that joins the chorus of critics against him is his son, Portgas D. Ace. Unlike the sword that shares his father’s name, Ace was not as closely bonded to his father. Born Gol D. Ace, he changed his surname in honor and respect for his mother, shortening her life by postponing his birth to keep him hidden from the government. His father, Roger, arranged for Ace to be adopted by Monkey D. Garp, a marine Vice Admiral and his rival. This was an attempt to shield Ace from the harm associated with having a legendary pirate as a father. Over time, Ace developed a bond with Monkey D. Luffy, who became one of his two sworn brothers, along with Sabo.
From my perspective, it’s not so much about my dad’s profession that fuels my animosity, but rather the infamy that came with it and the neglect I endured because of it. In defiance, I took control, establishing the Spade Pirates, and later joining forces with the Whitebeard Pirates, a crew led by a rival of Roger’s whom I respect as a friendly adversary. Interestingly enough, despite my palpable hatred for dear old dad, I find myself mirroring his pirate spirit – we share a rebellious streak and an unorthodox approach to our buccaneering ways.
3. Franky
Son Of An Unknown Pirate Couple
- Their relationship: Non-existent since the pair abandoned him 26 years ago. He resented pirates as a whole for many years due to this fact.
As a history buff and self-proclaimed treasure hunter, I can’t help but feel a deep fascination with the mysterious figure known as Franky. Not much is publicly known about his birth parents, except that they were pirates sailing the vast seas of South Blue. When he was just 10 years old, they cast him off their ship after crossing into the Grand Line.
From an early age, Franky demonstrated an uncanny ability to assemble a variety of items with incredible precision. His knack for tinkering didn’t go unnoticed, and Tom, a master shipwright, took him under his wing, nurturing his talent alongside another young apprentice named Iceburg.
During this period, Franky developed a bias against pirates, having experienced their cruelty firsthand. Remarkably, he was once invited to join the legendary Roger Pirates by Kozuki Oden, but he declined due to his complicated past. The enigma that is Franky continues to captivate me, and I can’t help but wonder what secrets his past holds.
Through persistent encouragement from friends and associates at Water 7, Franky ultimately decided to join the Straw Hat Pirates as their shipbuilder. His past with his parents is largely unexplored and insignificant, making it difficult to draw comparisons between their pirate lives and his own. However, it’s evident that Franky’s knack for modifying ships, inventing new devices, and even altering himself as a cyborg, are all heavily influenced by his time learning shipbuilding under Tom. It seems that any piracy lessons he may have learned from his parents have since been overshadowed by the knowledge he gained from Tom.
4. Charlotte Katakuri
Son Of Charlotte Linlin
- Their relationship: Seemingly positive, Katakuri follows his mom’s order to the letter. How he feels about them and how she has shaped his life overall are unclear.
Charlotte Linlin often incorporates her family extensively into her pirating activities. A significant number of her most capable shipmates are offspring from brief marriages that usually dissolve upon the birth of the child. Over the span of 18 to 60 years, she has given birth to a total of 85 children, with Charlotte Katakuri being considered her strongest.
Just like most of her offspring, Katakuri belongs to the Big Mom Pirates’ crew led by his mother. He holds a significant position within this group, being one of the Three Sweet Commanders, a prestigious title reserved for her strongest children. This status grants him control over many other crew members. Katakuri maintains a reasonable bond with his mother and acts as a protective elder sibling to his younger siblings while fulfilling his duties as a devoted son. He inherited some traits from his mother, such as remarkable strength and an enormous appetite.
It’s important to point out that Linlin, or Kaido, isn’t only loving towards her children. Although she sometimes grants authority over her territories to certain kids and even allows their indulgence in vices, it’s evident in most instances that they are under her control. She often uses her children as pieces in strategically arranged marriages to increase her power. Moreover, she doesn’t take kindly to anyone trying to leave her domain. As for Katakuri, whether he had any feelings about life beyond his mother’s jurisdiction is uncertain at this point. However, with Linlin’s supposed death at Wano being disputed, and as the second-eldest son and strongest member of her crew, Katakuri is currently among the two pirates favored to lead the group in her absence.
5. Yamato
Son Of Kaido
- Their relationship: Mutual hatred, stemming largely from Yamato’s admiration of Oden.
Kaido played a crucial role in the Kurozumi family’s conquest of Wano. Living within the country gave him the opportunity to create and deal weapons, even trading with figures like Doflamingo. This made it possible for several legendary weapons from Wano to become available on the black market in the criminal underworld. He is also known for the murder of Kozuki Oden, who was set to become Wano’s shogun before Orochi’s takeover. Since then, he has been working to strengthen his crew, The Beasts Pirates, by providing them with artificial Zoan Devil Fruits called SMILEs and demolishing and rebuilding any crews that oppose him, ultimately forcing them to join his pirate group.
Yamato, his son, deeply admired Kozuki Oden, whom he considered his adversary. He was so determined to imitate this man that his personal identity, regarding gender, was different from what he was assigned at birth. Although Kaido acknowledges and respects his son’s identity, their relationship is severely strained due to Yamato’s obsession with Oden. There are minor exceptions, as Kaido admires the strength of his son and hints that he might make him the next shogun of Wano after betraying Orochi. Despite the abuse he suffered at his father’s hands, Yamato held onto a glimmer of hope for his father’s goodness, feeling genuinely surprised when he discovered that the restraints Kaido told him would explode if he left the country actually did explode.
Yamato, much like Oden, aspires to be a globe-trotting pirate. Oden had previously sailed with both the Whitebeard Pirates and Roger Pirates before returning to Wano. Presently, Yamato is tasked with guarding Wano, but he has shown great enthusiasm about joining the Straw Hat Pirates once his duties are completed in this region. Like his father, Yamato is an Oni and possesses strength far beyond that of typical humans. If they were to unite, the Straw Hats would undoubtedly benefit from Yamato’s immense power.
