Valve Confirms The Steam Machine Won’t Have a Subsidized Price

The Steam Machine won’t be as cheap as many people expected. A Valve engineer confirmed it won’t be sold at a discounted price. Instead, it will likely cost about the same as building a regular PC, meaning the final price will depend on the cost of parts like memory and graphics cards. Valve has confirmed previous reports about this pricing structure.

Valve first revealed the Steam Machine on November 12th as their newest effort to appeal to console gamers. While Valve hasn’t announced a price or release date yet, it’s currently expected to launch around 2026. The machine will run on a powerful six-core AMD processor with speeds up to 4.8 GHz and offer some customization options, including the ability to install different operating systems. Users will be able to choose between models with 512 GB or 2 TB of storage, and it will support displays up to 8K resolution through DisplayPort.

Valve Confirms the Steam Machine Won’t Be Sold at a Loss

Early concerns about the Steam Machine being expensive appear to be true. Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais recently confirmed in a SkillUp interview that the system won’t be sold at a discounted price. Instead, it will be priced competitively with PCs offering similar performance. Griffais explained that Valve aims to offer a good value for the level of power the Steam Machine provides. Considering it includes high-end components like 16GB of DDR5 RAM and an 8GB AMD graphics processor, the final price will likely depend on current RAM and GPU costs.

Desktop computer RAM prices have more than doubled this fall. This is because the supply that usually goes to consumers is now being used for the servers built by companies like OpenAI and Google to power artificial intelligence. For example, a RAM kit that cost around $90 in August 2025 was selling for over $250 just three months later. This increase in RAM prices could also impact the cost of current-generation gaming consoles, with reports suggesting Microsoft might raise the price of Xbox consoles again.

Although the Steam Machine is expected to be more powerful than most Steam users’ computers, its success will likely depend on how much it costs. We’ll have to wait and see when Valve reveals more information about it.
