As a PlayStation fan, I was really surprised to read that they’ve made around $1.2 billion just from selling their games on Steam! It seems like the days of PlayStation games only being on PlayStation are slowly coming to an end, and Sony, along with Microsoft, are putting more and more titles on other platforms. People are debating whether this is a good thing overall, but so far, it’s been a huge win for PlayStation – they’re making a ton of extra money!
Although Sony hasn’t released as many games on multiple platforms as Xbox, launching games on PC is now a key part of their plan. According to CEO Herman Hulst, releasing games like God of War on PC helps attract players to the PS5, and launching live-service games on both PC and PlayStation at the same time expands the player base. The strong performance of games like Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn on PC proves this approach is effective, and recent sales numbers support that conclusion.
PlayStation Games Have Made $1.5 Billion in Revenue on Steam
A recent report estimates Sony has earned over $1.5 billion in revenue from releasing PlayStation games on Steam. After Valve takes its share, Sony’s profit from these PC releases is around $1.2 billion. Helldivers 2 is the biggest contributor, bringing in $400 million in revenue. It’s become Sony’s fastest-selling game ever, with over 12 million copies sold on both PS5 and PC in just 12 weeks. Notably, while Helldivers 2 is a continuously updated “live service” game, Sony’s other top performers on Steam – Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Days Gone, and Spider-Man – are traditional, single-purchase titles.
Sony isn’t alone in profiting from releasing games previously only available on their own systems. Microsoft’s Forza Horizon 5 earned $100 million from sales on PlayStation 5, and by late 2024, PlayStation players had spent 64% of all money spent on Microsoft games. Despite some dips in console sales overall, these figures clearly show why both Sony and Xbox are now more open to releasing games on multiple platforms.
Although PlayStation has seen success bringing its popular single-player games to PC, there are reports they might be scaling back this practice. A recent report from Alinea Analytics suggests that sequels haven’t performed as well on Steam as the original games in those series. For example, God of War Ragnarok sold significantly fewer copies on PC than the first God of War, and the PC version of Spider-Man 2 sold about half as many copies as the original Spider-Man. Even so, Sony’s overall strategy of releasing games on PC has been a positive one so far.
