Rockstar Games experienced a major shake-up in 2020 with the departure of Dan Houser, one of the company’s founders. While the loss was significant, reports suggest the reason wasn’t simply his leaving, but a disagreement between Dan and his brother, Sam, that led to communication problems.
Dan Houser, known for generally avoiding public attention, has recently been speaking out more. In a recent interview with Lex Fridman, he explained why the game Agent was canceled and shared details about why Bully 2 was never released.
A new unofficial line has opened up on his Rockstar Games departure.
Rockstar Games’ Direction Is Why Dan Houser Left

When news of Dan Houser’s departure from Rockstar Games appeared on the GTAForums, a user named Tez2 responded to a discussion about the reasons behind it. Someone pointed out that while the exact reasons might remain unknown, many believe things aren’t going well at Rockstar, especially considering reports from current employees and the company’s ongoing issues with unionization efforts. They found it strange that anyone would pretend everything is fine.
Here was Tez2’s response:
So, I’m hearing from a couple of ex-developers that he left because he and his brother had a big disagreement about where they were taking the company. Apparently, if it had been about something like cracking down on a union or bad working conditions, he would’ve bailed back in 2018 to make amends for that quote Jason Schreier wrote about. It sounds like this disagreement was the final straw.
This statement came after Rockstar Games recently laid off some employees. Tez2 has stated that these layoffs aren’t related to the matter at hand, but this remains unconfirmed and is just speculation until official records are released.
