FromSoftware Switch 2 Exclusive Has Been in Development Since 2019

A trustworthy source says that FromSoftware has been working on The Duskbloods, a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive game combining player-versus-player and player-versus-environment gameplay, since before 2019, even before Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice came out. The game was originally revealed during the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement in April.

FromSoftware’s previous action role-playing games included online co-op, but multiplayer wasn’t usually a central part of the gameplay. Elden Ring Nightreign changed that with its release earlier this year, offering a quick and replayable experience designed for three players to play together online. Now, The Duskbloods appears set to build on this approach, becoming the developer’s first game to combine player-versus-player combat with cooperative gameplay against environmental challenges.

Rumor: The Duskbloods Was Greenlit Before Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice’s Launch

A new rumor suggests that The Duskbloods has been in development for quite some time, even before the multiplayer features of Elden Ring Nightreign were being worked on. On November 23th, FromSoftware news reporter Ziostorm posted a YouTube video about the upcoming Forsaken Hollows DLC for Elden Ring Nightreign. In the video, Ziostorm mentioned a recent post by Giwin, a Chinese game journalist known within the FromSoftware community for accurately leaking Elden Ring boss designs prior to the game’s launch.

According to a post by Giwin (translated by Ziostorm), FromSoftware plans to release two character trailers for the new classes in the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, followed by a final launch trailer, all within the next week. Giwin also believes FromSoftware will then start sharing information about The Duskbloods, a project that may have been in development as early as 2019, even before marketing began for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

As a huge FromSoftware fan, I’m hearing that The Duskbloods is getting a ton of attention during development – apparently, they’ve spent more time prototyping this game than anything they’ve ever made! Giwin says it’s even got some really new ideas that could influence game design for years to come, just like Sekiro did. If the rumors are true and it really does come out in 2026, it’ll have been in development since 2019, making it their longest project ever. We know Elden Ring took around 5-6 years, Bloodborne around 3-4, and each Dark Souls game took between 2-4 years, so this is a big one!

Okay, so I’ve been following the leaks about the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, and you always have to take those with a grain of salt, right? It’s all based on someone’s translation after all. But FromSoftware just dropped a trailer showing off a new character class – the Scholar – and it’s making me think maybe this rumor isn’t totally off base! It’s getting me really excited.
