One Piece is a very popular anime that has been running for a long time. It’s divided into different story arcs, and each one is enjoyable in its own way. Even though there are many arcs, people love One Piece because of its consistently great storyline.
Honestly, one of the things I love most about One Piece is how rewatchable it is! So many of the story arcs are just fantastic – the story is gripping, and the fights are incredible, so you want to revisit them. But it’s more than just fun; going back to certain arcs actually gives you a deeper understanding of the themes and why characters do what they do. It really adds another layer to the whole experience!
This post contains spoilers for One Piece.
Fish-Man Island Arc
Highlights The Racism In The Story
- Hody Jones was the perfect villain for the arc
The Fish-Man Island arc is often considered one of the weaker parts of the story, mainly because it doesn’t feature a particularly strong or impressive villain. However, it’s a mistake to view the arc simply as a showcase for the Straw Hats’ upgraded abilities. It’s about much more than that.
The Fish-Man Island story arc primarily explores the theme of prejudice. Hody Jones created the New Fish-Man Pirates because of his deep-seated hatred for humans. While humans were indeed prejudiced against the people of Fish-Man Island, Hody’s motivations went further – he even harmed those within his own group who disagreed with him. The arc demonstrates the complex and often fraught relationship between humans and other races. Hody Jones and his crew served as ideal villains for Eiichiro Oda’s exploration of racism, as they were driven by intense hatred and determined to impose their beliefs.
Skypiea Arc
Has A Lot Of Information About Important Historical Figures
- The debut of Observation Haki
The Skypiea arc is a standout among the earlier story arcs in One Piece. It’s a fantastic adventure that sheds light on key characters from the past, such as Calgara and Noland, and uncovers the history of Shandora.
The Skypiea arc features a Poneglyph with a message left by Roger. While it might not seem crucial at first, its significance becomes clear as the story progresses and fans learn about Nika.
Whole Cake Island Arc
Revealed Sanji’s Turbulent Past
- Features one of the most emotional moments in the entire story
The Whole Cake Island arc received a somewhat mixed reaction from fans, largely because it didn’t focus as much on action as previous arcs. Many viewers were also disappointed that the Straw Hat crew was split up, meaning some popular characters like Zoro, Robin, and Franky had limited screen time. Finally, a lot of people were hoping to see Sanji gain a significant power boost, but that didn’t happen.
This arc primarily focused on revealing Sanji’s backstory and his emotional development. Abandoned by his family, he was forced to flee and endured many difficulties before finding acceptance with the chefs of Baratie and, later, the Straw Hat crew. Revisiting the arc makes it clear that the story wasn’t about Sanji gaining physical strength, but rather about showcasing his personal growth as he confronted his deepest fears.
Wano Country Arc
Shows The Ill Effects Of Tyranny
- The culmination of decades of struggle
Many fans consider the Wano Country arc to be the highlight of One Piece. While it mainly revolves around Luffy’s battle with Kaido, it’s packed with exciting and visually stunning fights. However, all the action sometimes meant that the arc’s deeper themes weren’t as noticeable.
The story showed how powerful people acted selfishly, ignoring the suffering of others. Children like Otama went hungry and lacked clean water, forcing them to work incredibly hard just to survive. We also saw Oden’s fight to open Wano Country to the outside world. He believed it was important for future generations to be able to connect and interact with others, and didn’t want Wano to remain isolated.
Sabaody Archipelago Arc
Shows The True Nature Of The Celestial Dragons
- Themes of racism and poverty are overshadowed
The Sabaody Archipelago is best known as the place where we first met the Supernovas and Admiral Kizaru. Kizaru’s sudden appearance threw the pirate world into chaos, as everyone knew how powerful Admirals were. We also met Silvers Rayleigh during this arc. While it was full of incredible events, the arc’s deeper meaning often gets lost in the excitement.
The Sabaody Archipelago arc reveals a dark and disturbing side of the World Government. It features an auction where people – including those from other races – were treated as commodities and sold into lifelong slavery. This arc also exposes the arrogant and condescending attitude of the Celestial Dragons, who believe they are far above everyone else.
Thriller Bark Arc
Included Characters Whose True Identity Was Revealed Much Later
- Emphasizes how people handle grief differently
The Thriller Bark arc is often considered the scariest story arc in One Piece. It takes place on a giant ship owned by Gecko Moria. What’s unique about this arc is that the Straw Hat crew worked together as a team to defeat Moria, rather than fighting him one-on-one.
This arc featured characters like Captain John, Ryuma, and Lola, who initially seemed minor. Looking back at recent events, though, they feel much more meaningful. The story also highlights the importance of healthy grieving. Brook lost his entire crew but remained a good person, eventually finding a new family with the Straw Hats through perseverance. In contrast, Moria’s crew was defeated by Kaido, which led him to change his approach and attempt to create an undying crew by stealing shadows.
