Magic: The Gathering’s Monster Hunter Collab Delayed After “Disappointing” Reaction

Wizards of the Coast recently announced a collaboration with Capcom to release special, limited-edition Magic: The Gathering cards inspired by Monster Hunter, originally scheduled for December 1st. However, after hearing feedback from fans, they’ve decided to postpone the sale until 2026 to make some changes to the product.

A new post on the official Magic: The Gathering website revealed that the release of new cards, originally planned for December 1st, has been postponed to a few months from now.

We want to be upfront: last week’s announcement of the Secret Lair x Monster Hunter Superdrop didn’t go as planned. We received a lot of feedback that you were unhappy with it, and we agree we can improve. Because of this, we’re delaying the release and completely redesigning the Superdrop.

So, the initial plan was to release 19 cards in four drops – The Hunt, The Hunters, Monster I, and Monster II. But when the info dropped, everyone immediately noticed a couple of big problems. One card actually misspelled “Kokoto” – a pretty embarrassing mistake! But the biggest issue was that there were no Equipment cards. That’s a huge deal for Monster Hunter, since weapons and gear are so central to the game, and everyone was really expecting those cards to be included.

2025 has been packed with Secret Lair releases from Wizards of the Coast, featuring many popular brands crossing over into Magic: The Gathering with limited-edition sets. Just last month, they partnered with PlayStation for seven different drops, and in recent months, we’ve also seen sets inspired by Jaws, Furby, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and The Office.
