The upcoming Secret Lair release for Monster Hunter in Magic: The Gathering has been postponed and is being revised. Although previous Secret Lair drops have had problems, they’re very popular with collectors. This is because they feature new artwork for existing cards, and occasionally include cards with unique abilities not available in other sets.
The Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair Encyclopedia release was a hit, featuring valuable cards from the game’s past with beautiful new artwork. However, not all Secret Lair releases are successful. Some have been criticized for being a poor value, having uninspired card choices, or not doing justice to the game’s themes. The Monster Hunter release, for example, faced all of these issues.
MTG Officially Delays Monster Hunter Secret Lair, Reworks it Entirely
The recently announced Magic: The Gathering and Monster Hunter Secret Lair collection has been delayed until 2026 and will be completely redesigned. Following negative feedback and an earlier leak of the card list, Wizards of the Coast announced that the cards will receive new artwork and a revised selection to more accurately represent the Monster Hunter universe and fit better within Magic: The Gathering gameplay.
Problems with Magic: The Gathering’s Secret Lair releases happen fairly often. Usually, these issues involve website traffic and limited product availability. However, technical difficulties have occurred in the past as well. Recently, Wizards of the Coast announced delays for some Secret Lair products due to manufacturing problems and potential quality control issues. But the current criticism surrounding the Monster Hunter Secret Lair drop is unique. Fans aren’t just upset about getting the products; they feel the value doesn’t match the price, the cards chosen weren’t great, and the collaboration could have featured more relevant characters or elements from the Monster Hunter universe.
Okay, so I was seeing a lot of talk about the Monster Hunter Secret Lair drop for Magic: The Gathering, and it got me thinking. The Sol Ring card they included has new art featuring Valstrax, a dragon from Monster Hunter, instead of the usual ring. Which, okay, makes sense – Sol Ring is an artifact, and Valstrax is a dragon. But the connection feels a little weak. I get that Valstrax uses air pressure and fire, kinda like a powerful engine, but it’s still a creature, not an object. It’s a bit confusing to have a dragon be the main visual for a card that’s supposed to be an artifact. I wasn’t the only one thinking this, either – PleasantKenobi pointed out the same thing. It just feels a little off, you know?
The recent criticism of the Sol Ring artwork is similar to the concerns fans had when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set with pizza-themed lands was announced for Magic: The Gathering in 2026. This could indicate a larger issue that Wizards of the Coast needs to resolve.
On top of that, the value of each drop was very low. This was as follows:
- Secret Lair x Monster Hunter: The Hunt – Total value: $8.20
- Secret Lair x Monster Hunter: The Hunters – Total value: $25.50
- Secret Lair x Monster Hunter: The Monsters – Total value: $10.15
- Secret Lair x Monster Hunter: The Monsters 2 – Total value: $9.15
The initial card drops for sets like The Hunt, The Monsters, and The Monsters 2 weren’t worth much – they sold for around $10, despite costing $30 or $40. The Sol Ring promo card also didn’t hold significant value, and because it was only available briefly with bundle purchases, it caused frustration. Given these issues, it’s understandable why the project was paused.
Okay, so the Monster Hunter Secret Lair is coming back eventually, but Wizards hasn’t given us a solid date yet. They said to keep checking over the next few months, and we should get more details sometime in 2026. Honestly, with Secret Lairs, they can just drop them whenever, so it’s hard to say exactly how it’ll fit into the Magic: The Gathering schedule for that year. I’m just keeping an eye out for updates!
