Players of ARC Raiders are all familiar with Scrappy, a unique rooster who wanders around your base, collecting resources while you’re out on missions. Despite his helpfulness, the mystery of how he arrived and what his overall role is remains unsolved – he just seems to enjoy gathering scrap!
Embark Studios recently explained the origins of Scrappy and its role in the game ARC Raiders.
Scrappy Has an Origin Story
Johan, a 3D artist from the team making ARC Raiders, recently shared the story of how Scrappy, the game’s popular rooster character, came to be on the game’s website.
I was living with my parents, who had a small flock of chickens. During an online meeting, a few of the chickens unexpectedly wandered into the house and walked right behind me, completely disrupting everything! One of those chickens was a rooster named Håkan, who would later be known as Scrappy.
Håkan wasn’t like most roosters. He was a sweet, affectionate bird, even though he was blind in one eye and a bit clumsy – he often stumbled over his food and tripped. I absolutely loved him.
I once decided to create a 3D scan of Håkan and secretly add him into the game as a fun hidden surprise. In the earlier versions of the game, you could occasionally see a basic version of him running around the cantina.
Then Håkan really got to show what he could do! The team needed something in the game that would basically give us stuff after every raid – a reliable way to get resources, you know?
We tossed around a lot of ideas – robots, cats, even robot-cats! But the art team didn’t have the resources to create them, and the meeting hit a standstill. Then, someone had a great idea: “What about a rooster?”
What started as a small, fun idea unexpectedly became a huge hit. Scrappy, initially a hidden surprise and intended as a placeholder, quickly became a fan favorite and an essential part of the ARC Raiders world. If you spot Scrappy, be sure to say hello for me!
The story is simple, but it beautifully explains why Scrappy exists in a world with so few animals. While the world is a bleak, post-apocalyptic place and most of the joy has disappeared, knowing Scrappy will be there when you come back to Speranza is a comforting thought.
